1861 Tax Assessment

Lumber Township

This information is in a small ledger at the Cameron County Courthouse.  It contains the tax assessment records for Lumber Township for the year of 1861 as is possibly the first tax assessment for the township after the change to Cameron County. Taxes were assessed for land owners, tenants, and single men. They were assessed for wages (except for farmers), property value, cows, horses, pleasure vehicles (buggies), and specifically gold watches valued at more than $300. Transcribed by Mike Wennin
