Brooks Academy, Sinnemahoning

In 1864–1865, John Brooks established a school of higher education in Sinnemahoning called Brooks Academy that he expected to turn into a college. John and Martha Mason Brooks wanted a formal education for their family of 10 children, so they built Brooks Hall and employed principals and teachers from the city. The large, upstairs room of Brooks Hall was used for Brooks Academy, and the lower floor for store rooms. The pupils were taught music as well as basic reading, writing and arithmetic throughout the winter. Many local families whose children had completed their public school education paid tuition to attend Brooks Academy. The school remained open until 1873. When the school closed, the building was used for a lodge room upstairs, and a store room and apartments downstairs. Later, Fulton's Store occupied the building. In 1987, over 100 years after the school's closing, fire destroyed the building.
