MARY ARTHANA WAGNER, consort of M.D. Wagner, Esq., after a lingering illness, which she bore with a resignation and fortitude as is only known to the christian. Afflicted for the last two years and six months with pulmonary consumption, she died aged 22 years and 6 months. Beloved by all who knew her, a large circle of friends bemoan her loss, although conscious that she died with a firm belief in a happy delivery from the troubles and sorrows of this world through her Savior and Redeemer. M. On Monday, the 2nd inst., in Allegheny Township, Mr. MATTHEW IVORY, aged about 59 years. 11 Jun 1856 Vol. 3, No. 33 page 2 Court Proceedings. We are now in the second week of our Court. Below will be found a summary of the proceedings so far as received. Sentence postponed until next sessions. Commonwealth vs. Poly Litzinger--Assault and Battery. A True Bill. Def't pleads Guilty, and submits, sentence to pay a fine of $5 and costs. page 3 DIED. In Ebensburg on Friday the 6th inst., E.J. daughter of I.C. and E. Singer the 14th year of her age. She was one of youth's purest plants that ever grew in this garden of sin and sorrow, but is now removed to be transplanted in the Paradise of God, there to bloom forever. 18 Jun 1856 Vol. 3, No. 34 page 3 List of Retailers Of Goods, Wares, Merchandize, within the County of Cambria, returned and classified according to law, as follows:

LITTLE Merchantile Appraiser. 25 Jun 1856 Vol. 3, No. 33 page 2 Fatal Affray We regret to learn that an unfortunate occurrence happened at Carrolltown in this county on Monday afternoon last, which resulted in the death of a man named Jeremiah Fenton. It appears that some difficulty had occurred between Fenton, and Henry J. Campbell about a boy who had run away from the latter. At the time of the affray, Campbell was at work in a stave making shop, when Fenton came in, and an immediate altercation ensued. Several persons were present at the time, and heard the loud language between them. Campbell was standing with a stave in his hand, and warned Fenton off, but which was disregarded by the latter. Upon approaching Campbell he stooped as if reaching for a stave when Campbell struck him a blow across the head with the one he was holding, by which he was completely stunned.--He was then carried to a house close by, where he lingered until about eleven o'clock the same night when he expired. Campbell immediately surrendered himself and is now in jail. A post mortem examination was made in the case by Drs. Lewis and Smith, and an Inquest was held over the body by James Carroll, Esq. As the whole matter will soon undergo a legal investigation we forbear making any comments at present upon this unfortunate occurrence. page 3 DIED At the residence of Mr. Thomas M. Ross in the Borough of Summitville on Wednesday evening the 18th inst. Miss Amanda Thornberg in the 20th year of her age. But a short time since she was in the full vigor of health, but attacked by disease, after a short and severe illness she now lies in the silent tomb. Possessing an amiable disposition, and beloved by all who knew her, she was followed to the grave on the following day by a large train of sorrowing friends. 2 Jul 1856 Vol. 3, No. 36 RAN AWAY FROM the subscriber on the 20th instant, an indentured apprentice named Henry Kost, he is about 15 years old. I hereby caution all persons not to trust him on any account. HENRY J. July 2, 1856. 23 Jul 1856 Vol. 3, No. 39 page 2 DIED At the residence of his son, MICHAEL in Washington township on the 19th instant, DENNIS BRAWLEY Senior, at the advanced age of eighty seven. The deceased was amongst the early settlers of Cambria county, and took his full share in subduing the forests, and clearing out the highways of what is now, one of the most prosperous portions of the Commonwealth. Until death, he bore with him an honest a heart as ever beat beneath the bosom of an Irishman. Throughout a long life, and amid a variety of phases of fortune, he had the reputation of an honest and true man. His life was full of viciasitudes; but his character was always sound. The young, who knew him, sorrow that he is dead, the old, feel in his death the loss of a brother. The people of Cambria county will live long before they consign to the grave a better man than Dennis Brawley Sr. Peace to his soul. 30 Jul 1856 Vol. 3, No. 40 page 2 DEMOCRATIC COUNTY CONVENTION Pursuant to the notice of the Chairman of the Democratic County Committee, the Delegates representing the different election districts of Cambria county, met in the Court House in Ebensburg on Tuesday July 29th at 2 o'clock P.M. THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA TO James Somerville, Mary Jane Somerville, (intermarried with Nathaniel Hughes, now dead,) David Somerville, and William Somerville heirs and representatives of David Somerville, late of Susquehanna township, deceased--Greeting: You and every of you are hereby cited to be and appear at an Orphans' Court to be held at Ebensburg in and for said county on the first Monday of September next, then and there to answer to a certain petition made by Richard Ashcraft for the specific performance of a contract made between the said Richard Ashcraft and said David Somerville deceased in his life time, for a certain piece or parcel of land situate (then) in Susquehanna township, now Chest township containing one hundred acres stint measure &c. &c. Sheriff's Office, Ebensburg Aug. 2, 1856 DIED On Sunday the 3d. inst, at her residence in this place, after a short illness, Mrs. Ann Evans, aged 69 years. On Friday the 1st, inst, Sarah Ann daughter of George and Mary Ann Huntley, aged 10 months and 26 days. On Friday night last, at 12 o'clock, MR. JOHN ELLIS, of this place, at the advanced age of almost 93 years. The deceased was born in Swanage Dorset, Isle of Purbewck, England, on the 10th of October, 1763. For almost thirty years he was a resident of Johnstown. Some two years ago Mr. Ellis received an injury from a fall, and has been confined to his bed almost ever since. Surrounded by children and sympathizing friends, he descended to the grave as a shock of corn fully ripe. He long outlived the generation in which he was born, and at last borne down with the ever increasing infirmities of old age, he sleeps with his fathers.--His death was as gentle as a infant's sleep, and gave hope of a glorious resurrection. By virtus of sundry writs of Venditioni Exponas, and Levari Facias issued out of the Court of Common Pleas of Cambria county, and to me directed, there will be exposed to sale by public outcry, at the Court House in the Borough of Ebensburg, on Monday the 1st day of September next at one o'clock P.M. ALSO--All the right, title, and interest of James Ross, of, in and to a tract of land situate on the waters of Clearfield Creek in Clearfield township, Cambria county, warranted in the name of James Burns, adjoining lands warranted in the names of William Burns, James M'Guire and others, containing Three hundred and ninety-one acres and 113 perches, more or less, about 30 acres of which are cleared, having thereon erected a double saw mill, a single saw mill four dwelling houses and three stables in the occupancy of John Earhart and Sylvester Weakland. Taken in execution and to be sold at the suit of M'Lanahan, Jack & Co. EXECUTOR'S NOTICE. At Quitmanville, on Wednesday night, Mrs. ELIZABETH KESHNER, about 27 years of age. 3 Sep 1856 VOL. 3, NO. 45 DIED At Sumerhill, Cambria county Pa., on Wednesday August 27th, FLORA, daughter of William and Cathraine J. Murray, aged 1 year and 3 months. 10 Sep 1856 VOL. 3, NO. 46 COURT PROCEEDINGS Com vs. Simon J. Weakland--Assault and battery. Deft. pleads not guilty. Jury called and sworn, who find the deft. guilty. Sentenced to 10 days imprisonment, $10 fine, and costs of suit. Com vs. Henry J. Campbell--Murder. Prisoner being arraigned, pleads not guilty, and puts himself on his country. Dist Atty similiter et issue. Jury called and sworn, who say that the defendant is not guilty. DIED In this Borough, on Tuesday night the 9th instant, E. HUTCHINSON, JR., ESQ., aged 40 years and 25 days. MEETING OF THE BAR A meeting of the members of the Ebensburg Bar was held at the Court House on Wednesday evening, the 10th inst. On motion, M.D. Magehan, Esq., was called to the Chair, and R.L. Johnston, Esq., appointed Secretary. Resolved, That the members of this Bar deeply lament the premature death of Edward Hutchinson, Jr. 17 Sep 1856 VOL. 3, NO. 47 DIED On Saturday evening, in Munster Township, Cambria county, September 13th, Catharine, consort of Solomon M'Culloch, aged 63 years. VALUABLE FARM AT PRIVATE SALE The undersigned in Carroll township, offers for sale his FARM containing one hundred acres, twenty-five of which are cleared, on wh ich there is a young Orchard. There is an "L" HOUSE, 34 by 36 feet and a BANK BARN erected on the premises. It lies on the Plank Road, 2-1/2 miles from Carrolton and 7-1/2 miles from Ebensburg. It is well watered. MURRAY to MISS ANNA M. SAYLOU. DIED On Wednesday, September 17th, at the residence of her father, HARRIET, consort of Mesheck Thomas, of this place. [Ebensburg] 1 Oct 1856 VOL. 3, NO. 49 To the Editors of the Democrat & Sentinel: GENTLEMEN; I see by the FREMONT papers and HAND BILLS that there is a meeting to be held at my House, in favor of Fremont. I can only say that I cannot directly or indirectly be made use of as a means to advance the claims of JOHN C. FREMONT, whose Principles are calculated to dissolve the Union and deprive a foreigner of the blessings of our glorious Constitution. I am a Buchanan Democrat, and cannot countenance any fraud on the community by connecting my name, in any way with a party, whose object and wish are disunion. I want no such meeting at my house. Yours responectfully, LAWRENCE SCHROTH (owned a hotel--house) DIED Suddenly on Tuesday the 23rd ult, at his residence in Allegheny Township, Mr. Joseph A. Todd in the 26 year of his age. In Loretto on Friday Morning the 26th inst, Mr. Anthony Litzinger aged 74 years and 7 months. The deceased was one of the oldest and most respected citizens of our county, and who up to the day of his death led a life of activity, industry, and usefulness. For many years he resided in the neighboring county of Huntingdon where he was well and favorably known, but his last and declining years were spent in the midst of his relatives and friends. He was followed to the grave by upwards of fifth of his immediate descendants and relatives, and a large train of acquaintances who testified the esteem in which he was held by the community in which he had so long lived. May he rest in peace. 8 Oct 1856 VOL. 3, NO. 50 Susquehanna Moving! An enthusiastic meeting of the citizens of Susquehanna was held at the house of Jerome Plott, on Saturday, Oct. 4th. W.A. Platt was selected President, Jacob Johnston, J. Plott, Samuel Breck, Chas. Weakland, R. Baum, Vice Presidents; Archibald Farrell, Secretary; R.H. M'Cormick, Chief Marshall; and Francis White and F.N. Hunter, assistants. An able address was delivered by Chas D. Murray, Esq., which was received with tremendous applause by the large crowd. A fine delegation was present from the Cherry Tree, and also one from Carroll township. The best spirit was manifested, and a firm determination on the part of every man to be at the polls early on the second Tuesday of October. His stock has been selected with great care and to immediate wants of our citizens. Connected with the store is a Millinery Department, under the superintendence of Miss Ellen M'Cann, where the ladies can be accommodated with the latest styles of Bonnetts, trimmings, &c. Watt, late of Summitville, Cambria co., dec'd, have been granted by the Register of said county, to the undersigned, notice is hereby given to all persons having claims against said estate to present them properly authenticated for settlement, and those indebted are requested to make payment without delay. In this Borough on Friday morning last, after a short illness "ELIZABETH WRAY", daughter of George C.K. and Eliza Zahm, in the 4th year of her age. 3 Dec 1856 VOL. 4, NO. 6 ADMITTED TO THE BAR.--On Wednesday 3d last, on motion of Hon. Henry D. Foster, Philip S. Noon Jr., was admitted to the bar, and to the practice of Law in this county. We are pleased to learn that our young friend passed a creditable examination. Although young in years, he possesses a mind well stored with information and thoroughly disciplined. He has already earned for himself an enviable reputation as a forcible, business-like, and at the same time graceful orator. 10 Dec 1856 VOL. 4, NO. 7 MARRIED On Wednesday 10th inst., by Rev. Mr. Pyatt, Mr. JACOB STAHL to Miss ELIZABETH HOOVER, all of this place. 17 Dec 1856 VOL, 4, NO. 8 LOCAL COLUMN PROCEEDINGS OF COURT QUARTER SESSIONS Chanceller et. al. vs. Jacob Kibler et. al. Ejectment for tract of land in Chest township, Cambria county. This case lasted eight days, and was brought to a close on Monday night about 11 o'clock, by the Jury bringing in a verdict in favor of the plaintiff against Anthony Gill, one of the defendants, and in favor of the balance of the defendants, being protected by the statute of limitations. This verdict is supposed to fix the location of the seven lost Drinkers, as they are called. His honor Judge Taylor, delivered an able charge to the jury. Counsel for plaintiff, Hon.
