The Butler County Historical Society is the official County Historical Society and is the repository for many of Butler County's historical documents and artifacts. Research facilities are located in the Lowrie/Shaw House directly behind the Butler County Courthouse, 123 W. Diamond Street, Butler. Our records are available to the public for research purposes. Some items available for research are: The 5 volume Butler County Cemetery Inventory, Butler County Histories, Atlases, family histories relating to the county, an extensive local history collection, land patents, school and tax records, and other genealogical resources.

Butler Public Library's Genealogy Room (second floor) contains all of the Butler County Histories, Atlases, microfilmed copies of different Butler County newspapers, an extensive obituary file, over 150 family histories relating to the county, query files, all Butler County census records, Armstrong County census records (1840-1920), a non-continuous run of the Butler City Directory (1910-present), an extensive local history collection, and other genealogical resources. Photocopiers and microfilm readers/copiers are available.

Butler County Court House and its Annex are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Records available include deeds and property records (Recorder of Deeds, [724]284-5340), wills, marriage, orphans court records, birth(1893-1905), death (1893-1905), and estate records (Register of Wills, [724] 284-5348), and naturalization and divorce records (Office of the Prothonotary,[724] 284-5214). Photocopiers, microfiche readers/copiers are available at various offices. Research is conducted upon request for a $3.00 per search fee and photocopying costs of $1.00 per page.

The University's collection includes microfilmed census records, early Pennsylvania newspapers (including Butler Whig, Butler Sentinel, Butler Eagle, and Slippery Rock Signal), Pennsylvania Archives, Pennsylvania County Histories and Atlases on microfilm, Butler County Cemetery Inventory, local history, general genealogical resources and the University Archives, documenting the history of Slippery Rock Normal School, Slippery Rock State Teachers College, and Slippery Rock State College. Photocopiers, microfilm readers and copiers are available. Anyone may use the Library, only card holders may check materials out. A $10.00 per year "Friends of Bailey Library" fee provides check out privileges.
Zelienople Historical Society

The Zelienople Historical Society operates an extensive library and two house museums. The library is located at Passavant House, open 9:00a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Appointments are appreciated. Use of the library is free to members, with an hourly charge for non-members. Photocopying is available. Research can be arranged upon request; the Society provides a list of researchers. The Historical Society Library contains materials relating primarily to the pioneer families of western Butler County, with many materials on the Buhland Passavant families, including the correspondence of Zelie Passavant (early 1800'sto the 1860's) and her son, the noted Lutheran philanthropist, William Alfred Passavant. Family trees, family histories, files, correspondence, and newspapers provide primary source material. The Society also has an extensive general historical collection.
