Tuckersmith got its name from one of the original directors of the Canada Company Martin Tucker Smith, a banker in London, England. Originally the name of the Township was spelled as two words, but over time was put together and now has been referred to as Tuckersmith for over 100 years. Settlers National origin is indicated by the various religious denomination. In the pioneer period well over half of the population were members of various branches of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, which indicates a heavy predominance of settlers of Scottish origin. A little over one-third were Methodists or Anglicans, which were probably of English descent. About one-sixth of the community were Roman Catholics which would be Irish descent. Tuckersmith shared with the Township of Goderich the honour of being the first township to hold a meeting for the purpose of setting municipal government in the County which was held in 1835 at Bayfield.
