Bits and Pieces of Roger Mills History

This poem was written about the burial place of my grt - grt- grandfather,

JESSE BROOKS DAY (His nickname was "Shamus O'Day."). He was born in 1833 &

died in 1915. He is buried at Sandstone Cemetery in Beckham Co., OK. It was

written by his daughter [my grt.-grt-aunt] CYNTHIA SUSAN (DAY) McELRATH.

In the county Roger Mills,

Mid'st the rugged rocks and rills,

Where the waters of the Sandstone play

A'top the highest hill

Where the cattle roam at will

And the coyote howls his mournful midnite lay--

There's a score of lonely graves

Where the windswept cactus waves,

And the fence has long since fallen to decay.

How silently they lie

Unseen by human eye

Waiting patiently the resurrection day.

But what does it matter

If God is near

And we know He is

He's everywhere.

The hills are His

As well as the deep

And He stands guard

Where His children sleep.

A typewritten note at the bottom: "Aunt Susie's poem in memory of the lonely

My great-great-grandfather is John Adam Mangold who married Madora Josephine Eller. They had Mary Ann, C. Otto, John Henry, Emma J, Jacob Edward, James Curtis, and Susan Louise. Many of their descendants are buried in the Fairview Cemetery, as i can see from the transcription on the genweb site.

My great grandmother is Susan "Louisa" Mangold (b. ca 1894, TX), who married John A. Keller (b. ca 1888, TX). Their daughter, Melba Keller, born in Durham, Roger Mills, OK on 24 Feb 1911 was my grandmother - raised in Cheyenne. She married Walter Hines.

Their other kids were Mabel, Mildred, Mala Ada, Madeline, Jessie, and John Jr. They mostly moved to California.

In the 1920 census, as well as in the fairview cemetery transcription, I found Alfred "Bud" Keller's family, who lived and is buried in Durham. I am certain that this family is related to mine, but I do not know how.

As for me, I grew up here in Hermosa Beach, Los Angeles, CA. I am only 24, young for a genealogist, but unfortunately all of my grandparents were gone before I developed an interest in genealogy. My dad remembers visiting "Grandma Mangold's" farm in Oklahoma when he was a child, but i have never been there.

My whole database can be viewed on my web page at the below URL.

Thanks!

This is what the county cemetery book says - Leila Evett helped with it: The Sandstone Cemetery lies north and east of the village of Berlin which is in our county. The cemetery is just over the line and lies in Beckham County. The cemetery lies in a vast pasture and at one time the cemetery was fenced but the fence is down and cattle and horses have access to the plot. Grass and weeds about knee deep, cover all of the ground. Some of the old timers think there are 40 or 50 unmarked graves. No one knows the original name of the cemetery was but as it is near Sandstone Creek they call it Sandstone. The first people buried there were two children, Paul and William Linville. Perhaps their parents owned the land and allowed others to be buried there. It may have been called the Linville Cemetery. Many thanks to Joe Andris for his help in supplying the following information. People buried: Jesse Day, Charley Edens, Helen Farmer, Delbert Hisel, Eliza Hisel, Jackson Hisel, Annie Joyce, Paul and William Linville, Virgie McAdams, Freeman Purdy, Reger, Clement Cottom......and 30 unmarked graves. I hope this info will help you - Oh yess the land description is NW1/431-12-22

Mrs. Klina Casady's book "Once Every Five years" and this is her record from the Cheyenne Star. "On the night of April 4, 1934, a rain fell in this county that measured 13.79 inches by the government gauge. Hundreds of head of hogs, cows, horses and other livestock were strewn along the course of the Washita River. Later carcasses of these were burned by the State Health Department. Miles of railroad track were washed away. Telephone telegraph, and high line poles for conveying electricity were swept down stream with the flood waters. The estimate of damage in this county was more than one and one-half million dollars. But the greatest loss was that of human life. 17 persons in the vicinity of Hammon awakened from sleep by a 25foot wall of water sweeping down the Washita lost their lives in the deluge. Many others barely escaped death by clinging to housetops, trees or other debris carried by the flood waters. The rain started about 6 p.m. and continued more than 5 hours. Cheyenne was without electric or telephone service for 40 hours. During the downpour water poured through buildings on Broadway causing great loss to buildings and merchandise. The soil, left with practically no vegetation, left Roger Mills County a barren wasteland -- a real dust bowl."
