BAKERS DEFEAT
WAKEMAN NINE
Checking the hitting attack of the invading Wakeman Red Caps for six successive innings and preventing a single visitor from reaching first base, Wayne "Pete" Blough, Sandusky High school faculty southpaw, hurled the H. and S. Bakers to a one-sided 16 to 6 triumph at the Esmond Athletic Field Sunday afternoon.
Immediately after brief opening day ceremonies during which Mayor Ernie Siggens pitched the first ball before a splendid turnout of local hardball fans despite the threatening weather, the Bakers began their assault on the visiting hurlers.
The Bakers banged out ten singles, three doubles and two triples for 15 hits. Blough and "Unk" Grathwol were the hitting stars with three bingles apiece.
Friday afternoon the Bakers meet the Cleveland Colored Stars at Esmond Athletic Field at 5:30 o’clock. Next Sunday, the locals oppose the Don Donnelson’s semi-pro team of Carey.
PLAN CEREMONIES
FOR SUNDAY’S GAME
Although announcement was made earlier this week that there would be no ceremonies marking the opening of the Esmond Athletic Field Sunday afternoon prior to the H. and S. Bakers-Wakeman Red Caps baseball game, officials of the Baker team and the Merchants’ Amateur Baseball Association said Friday night a last-minute program has been arranged.
Music is scheduled for 1:30 o’clock and the opening ceremonies start at 2:15, fifteen minutes before game time. Amandus Smith, backer of the H. and S. Bakers ball team, will be on the receiving end when Mayor Ernie Siggens tosses the first ball from his seat in the grandstand.

With Bement allowing only five scattered hits, while his teammates pounder the offerings of three pitchers for 11 safe wallops, the Wakeman Red Caps displayed plenty of power in defeating the Mischka Meats at Amherst. The Caps were leading 1-0 after seven innings, when they suddenly went on a batting spree to chalk up eight markers in the eighth. Bement fanned 10 batters.

pected to Pitch For Wake-
man in Sunday’s Game.
Wakeman Red Caps baseball club, opposing the Sandusky H. & S. Bakers at the Esmond Athletic Field next Sunday afternoon in the hardball opener, expect to send a strong lineup to the field against the locals.
For twirling duty, the Red Caps are banking on Carl Bement, sensational southpaw, Duncan and Owens may get the call but Bement is almost a sure choice of the Wakeman manager to face the Bakers in the inaugural fracas.
Behind the plate will be L. Wasem, another highly-touted member of the Red Caps club. Peters at first, Purvis at second and Barthlome at the third sack, comprises the probable infield for Sunday’s assignment, with Charles Bement at shortstop.
The outfield duties are to be shared by Don Gerber in right field, C. Wasem in center field and Len Gerber in left field. The Red Caps players are scheduled to be at the park for practice at one o’clock and partake in any ceremonies that may be planned for the opener.
The Cleveland baseball team, included in the East-West Colored League, comes to the Esmond Field on Friday, May 6, to play the Bakers and has a roster of well known colored players. C. Mothel, of the Kansas City Monarchs, is captain. Reduces and Russell are St. Louis stars and Beverly is considered one of the greatest colored southpaw hurlers in the country.
Dean, Mitchel, Davis, Arney, Cooper and Dawson are also on the pitching staff and it is said to be the strongest in the league. Robinson, of Birmingham, is a clever third sacker. Catchers, Wilson and Murray are outstanding in their respective positions.
On Friday, May 13, the Clevelanders start league play and meet the Cuban road team of Havana, Cuba, here. Detroit, Cleveland, Homestead Grays, Philadelphia, Washington, Newark, N. J., Baltimore and the Cuban road team are members of the circuit.

Open On Sunday.
Final arrangements for the opening of the Esmond Athletic Field Sunday afternoon at which time the Sandusky H. and S. Bakers and Wakeman Red Caps baseball teams play were completed by Ralph J. Roesch, business manger, Thursday night, and it was announced that Mayor Ernie Siggens will toss the first ball from the grandstand.
Prior to the Sunday opening, only Commodore Denig Post, American Legion league and H. and S. Bakers ball players have been staging workouts at the field and the Bakers-Red Caps clash officially opens the park for the 1932 season.
Roesch announced that there will be no special ceremonies for Sunday with the exception of Mayor Siggens tossing out the first ball. Catcher "Dootie" Thompson will be on the receiving end. For mound duty against the Wakeman nine, "Pete" Blough is almost a sure bet to start.
Schneider, Miller, Welschenbach, Halt, Willard Grathwol, Rich Kotz, Clyde Sharpe and Bloker, together with Abie Grathwol, Knupke, Tiegges and Schwerer complete the Bakers’ roster.
