Scanlon Catches Game
with Broken Finger;
Hovey Hurls Well
WAKEMAN, Aug. 30 - The Lorain Cardinals annexed their ninth straight victory here yesterday when they beat the Independents of this place by a 9 to 2 score.
Both Hovey of the Cards and Hyde of the Wakeman nine turned in a well hurled game but errors by his teammates caused the down fall of Hyde.
Each hurler had 13 strike-outs to his record. Hyde issued three free tickets to first base while Hovey went him one better. The losing moundsmen allowed eight bingles one of which was a circuit clout by Jenkins, while Hovey allowed seven, including a double by J. Beam.
Scanlon received a broken digit when he attempted to nab a fast foul tip off the bat of G. Scutt, broken digit when he attempted to nab a fast foul tip off the bat of G. Scutt, lead-off batter, in the first inning. The scrappy player refused to quit his duties behind the plate and caught the remainder of the tilt with his injured hand. He turned in a good game, but the Wakeman runner took liberties with him, stealing five bases which is far above the average.
Scutt Stars
The outstanding player for the home club was G. Scutt, the center gardener who covered a great deal of territory in middle field. He had four put-outs to his credit the majority of them being made after a hard run. They appeared to be sure hits when they left their bats.
Jenkins of the Lorain crew was again the star in the hitting department of the game getting two bingles in four trys. One of these was a four base blow with a runner on the paths at the time.
Hyde, the hurler, was the batting star for the locals. He collected two bingles in three trys.
