Harrison Coon married Priscilla Kidney, of Rockport, in 1840, came to Florence in 1849, and died in 1852. The wife was born in Rockport, Jan. 4, 1821. She married, 2nd, Alfred Cleveland in 1856, and they moved to Wakeman in 1867, and lived in the house afterward occupied by M. V. Armstrong. Mr. Cleveland died in 1888, and the widow married, 3rd, Warren Coon, brother of her first husband, in 1900, and died in Grand Rapids, Michigan, May 27, 1901. Her children were Amos and Lewis Coon, and Adah A. (Coon) Haskins, and died May 6, 1922.
Prosser Coon, born March 13, 1806, went to Scriba, Oswego county, N.Y., where he married Charilla P. Coe, Feb. 28, 1830. They lived there until about 1838 when they removed to Rockport, O., and to Wakeman about 1850. He owned the farm in Lot 14, on the Clarksfield-Florence road, the Dr. Young farm. Four years later they removed to Spencer, Ohio, where he died Aug. 26, 1881, and wife Jan. 7, 1885. They had children:

Warren Coon was born at Dryden, Tompkins county, N Y., April 16, 1820. In 1833 he came to Rockport, Ohio, with his parents. In 1841 he married Harriet Munn, and in 1854 came to Wakeman. He had previously bought the Bostwick, now the Stanley Pierce, farm in Lot 32. He sold this in 1861. He owned the Wakeman hotel, a dry-goods store and livery stable. In 1866, he removed to Hillsdale county, Michigan. In 1889, he removed to Bay City, Mich., where the wife died Nov. 30, 1889. She was born in Worthington, Ohio, Oct. 3, 1819. In 1890 Mr. Coon returned to Wakeman and lived here until 1900, when he married the widow of Harrison Coon (his brother)-see above. They removed to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where the wife died May 27, 1901. Mr. Coon married for the third time in 1902 when he was 85 years old, and died Jan. 13, 1903. His children were:

CORBIN, Orrin - son of Edward and Eunice Corbin, was born Dec. 31, 1802. Some time prior to 1830 he came to Birmingham with his father’s family. On Dec. 29, 1831, he was married to Chloe Parker, daughter of Zachariah, of Florence township. She was born in Livonia, N.Y., Oct. 8, 1814. Mr. Corbin bought land in Florence in 1836 and 37, and sold it the next year. In 1843 they moved to a farm on the Wakeman-Clarksfield road on Lot 49, where their son, Edward, afterward lived. Mr. Corbin died here May 12, 1875, and the wife lived there until her death Feb. 21, 1903. They had children:

CRAMER, Walter – owned the land and lived on it in Lot 5, the George Parsons farm. His wife, Jane, died here March 20, 1851, aged 50, and he died - of St. Vitus’ Dance Aug. 15, 1855, age 56.
CRANDALL, Charles Chapin – a son of Ezra and Polly (Parker) Crandall, was born Sept. 3, 1814. His parents lived near the outlet of Onandagua Lake, N.Y., and there the father died. They were the parents of four children, Charles C., Henry, Caroline and Adeline. Mrs. Crandall was the daughter of Asahel Parker, who came to Florence township at an early day. She had brothers, William W. (Squire Parker), Samuel, Herrick, and perhaps others. She came to Florence with her brother, Herrick, after the death of her husband. She married, 2nd, Henry B. Bates. (See page 54.) Charles C. Crandall married, Feb. 19, 1837, Caroline Sheretz (Sherarts, &c), of Vermillion. He bought 15 acres of land in Wakeman in 1836, of Linus Andrews and sold the same to John Daley, Jr., in 1839. He became a physician and located in North Amherst, where he died about 1851. He had sons, Ezra J., died in Minnesota, Charles S., lived in Owatonna, Minn., and Albert A. lived in Oregon. Henry Crandall, brother of Charles C., lived in Camden, then Minnesota.
CRAWFORD, Alexander – married Martha ("Patty") Wood, a daughter of Daniel Wood, of Florence, and sister of James Wood, of Florence, and they lived in Genoa, Cataraugus county, N.Y., but moved to Trumbull county, Ohio, about 1820, to Richland county, O., then back to Trumbull county, and in 1834 to Townsend, Ohio, and in 1838, to Wakeman. In 1837 Mr. Crawford purchased 60 acres of the northeast part of Lot 51, northeast of Wakeman, near the town line, where he lived in a log house until his death, Sept. 8, 1884, at the age of 84. (Note: Was not this log house the last one in the township to be used as a residence?)
The wife, Martha, died Oct. 26, 1842, at the age of 42. Mr. Crawford then married 2ND, Sedilla Kilburn.
Each wife was the mother of ten children of whom two of each family died in infancy. Their names were:

CURTISS, Henry L. – a son of Eleazer and Ann Curtiss, of Saulsbury, Conn., was born in 1801. In 1829 he emigrated to Florence and married Charlotte Eliza Weaver in 1837. In 1843 they moved to Clarksfield, and in 1857 to Wakeman. He had purchased a small farm in Lot 31, near the north line of the township on the west river road, and lived there for a number of years, and then moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and later to Florence, near Mason’s Mill, where he died in 1881. His wife died in 1884 after being helpless for some years. They had children, James, Charlotte and Mahlon.
CURTISS, Isaac – a native of Connecticut, came to Wakeman in 1833 with a wife and family. They lived at the west side of the township. Mr. Curtiss died April 24, 1849 at the age of seventy years.
A son, Wells Curtiss, lived in a house on the west town line road between the Orrin Lewis place and the corner south. With him lived one widowed and four maiden sisters. Our history of the family is very scant, but we find that Laura married Joseph Rockwell; Emeline died in 1848 at the age of 31; Melinda married John Smith and removed to Hood River, Oregon. In 1855 Wells Curtiss sold 6 ½ acres of land to Edward Maloney.
CURTISS, Dr. Isaac, a soldier of the Revolution, whose daughter, Betsy, became the second wife of Isaac Hill, and Dr. Curtiss came to Wakeman and made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Hill, and died Oct. 17, 1843, at the age of 89. (See page 74, Betts narrative.)
DANIELS, Nathaniel R. - a stone cutter by trade, lived with Johnson Wheeler in Clarksfield. In 1837 he lived in Wakeman and voted here. He removed to Florence, married Sarah Peck, and lived on a farm on the west town line road in Florence, and died in 1851, at the age of 42.
DECK, John E. – a wagon maker, lived west of the center of Wakeman on the place later owned by Mrs. Morris Canfield. In 1852, he sold the six acre place to Nicholas Westfall.
DeHART, Cornelius - born near Trenton, N. J., Jan. 20, 1822, went to Seneca Co., New York when two years of age. He married Martha A. Church, daughter of Elias (once a resident of Wakeman) Nov. 10, 1851. In 1859, they came to Wakeman and lived in a house south of Chester Manvel’s. The wife died Oct. 13, 1866, and Mr. DeHart died Nov. 5, 1891. Their children were:

DeLANO, Orrin - was a resident of Wakeman in 1835 at the time he purchased 10 acres of Lot 23 and 24 (part of the Ben Strong farm). He lived there until after 1837.
DENMAN, Samuel – a son of William Denman, of Kent, England, was born in England, April 3, 1814, and came to New York State with his parents. In 1834 he came to Norwalk, Ohio. On October 1, 1840, he married Fanny Parker, of Florence, (born Sept. 10, 1822), and settled on the Butler Road in Wakeman, on Lot 72, in 1851. He died Oct. 26, 1859. He had children: Clark H., born June 25, 1849, married Amelia W. Peters and lived in Matamora, Ohio; Elmer Parker Denman, born Feb. 26, 1851, married Amarilla Chrysler, of Wakeman, and after her death, 2ND, Mary Bentley, of Florence, and died in July 1908; Julia, born May 8, 1854, married George Bentley, of Florence, and died March 8, 1914; Franklin Eugene, born June 24, 1856, married Elnora Hopkins, of Birmingham, and died in Kansas, Sept. 21, 1888; Sarah Ann, and Mary Jane, who died Sept. 19,1850, one day apart, in childhood.
After the death of Mr. Denman, the widow married George Hill in 1862, and they lived on the Denman farm, where she died March 3, 1903. Mr. Hill was a son of Stephen Hill, of Birmingham, born May 15, 1838, and died Oct. 7, 1915, leaving a son, William.
DENMAN, Edward – a son of John, of the "Forks of the river" in Florence, and a grandson of William, of Kent, England, and Kingston, N.Y., was born Sept. 4, 1820, in Florence. He lived in the parental home until he had saved up $300. He then rented a farm of his father and later bought 183 acres of forest land in Wakeman. He married Adeline Archer, of Florence, Oct.14, 1847, and they made their home on the north 100 acre tract of Lot 82 on the Butler Road, the deed of which he obtained of the original proprietors in 1850. They lived for some years in a log house, until a frame house was built, into which they moved. This house, in its day, was one of the finest in the township.
Mrs. Denman was a daughter of Joseph Archer, and was born in New York City, May 3, 1826, and came to Florence with her parents in 1837, and died on the farm June 15, 1899. Mr. Denman sold the farm and removed to Wakeman village where he died March 10, 1910. They had children: Joseph A., married Frankie Pierce, daughter of Lemuel Pierce, of Wakeman, and is deceased. Adeline, married Stanley Pierce, of Wakeman, and died May 14, 1928. John E. married Belle Sprague, of Wakeman. Anna Belle, married, 1st, Elmer Pierce, of Wakeman, 2nd, Alfred Coon. Jennie. Louise, who died in 1895.
DENMAN, William - the second son of John Denman, of Florence, was born in Florence, Aug. 10, 1822. When he became of age he made his home in Wakeman. In 1850, he obtained a deed of 48 acres of land in Lots 51 and 61, but sold part of this and bought more afterwards. He made his home on Lot 51. He was married to Cordelia Hough, of Clarksfield, Sept. 8, 1853. Her father was John Hough and her mother was Ruth, daughter of Isaac Hill, of Wakeman. She died Aug. 14, 1868, at the age of 37. Mr. Denman married, 2nd, Jan. 28, 1869, Julia C. Partello. Mr. Denman had children:

DEREEMER, Benjamin L. – son of Jacob and Maria Dereemer, was born at Bethlehem, New Jersey, May 24, 1824. When a small boy he removed with his parents to Steuben county, N.Y., and in 1834 to Ohio, living in Florence a year, then settling in Camden. He married Roxy Kilburn, of Florence, Oct. 20, 1844.
She was born April 11, 1821, and was a sister of Mrs. Clough and Mrs. Crawford, of Wakeman. They lived in Birmingham until 1847 when they moved to Wakeman and bought the farm south of Edward Denman’s. The wife died Sept. 20, 1880, and Mr. Dereemer, on July 12, 1901. They had children: Mary, married Wilson Hamilton and died at the age of 26; Wesley, born in 1848, died Sept. 20, 1886, unmarred; Jane, born, Oct. 18, 1850, married William Bayless, and died in Wakeman, Aug. 9, 1917; Jerome, died infant; Roxana, born March 13, 1858,died 1880.
DODD, Joseph - was a resident here in 1835 and bought Elias Bell 30 acres of the east part of Lot 77 and sold the same to George Todd, 1838.
DONAHUE, Bartholamew - born in County Galway, Ireland, in 1816, came to the United States in 1844, but in a few years returned to Ireland. He married Catherine Ford, and again emigrated to this country, and came to Wakeman about 1861, and settled on the east side of the Butler Road on Lot 84, where he died March 16 1890. His wife was a sister of Michael Ford and of Mrs. Shiel, and died Oct. 11, 1899. Their children were Patrick, Ann and Catherine, deceased, Mary, living in Cleveland, and John and Julia, who lived on the old farm, unmarried.
DOWNS, Nathan - a son of Wait and Phebe (Hinman) Downs, and a grandson of Moses Downs, was born in New Britain, Conn., in 1809. Wait Downs was one of the men who made purchases of Wakeman land before the first settlers came here (See page 42). He died in 1822 and in 1831 his property was divided, and Nathan obtained 155 ¾ acres in Lot 34, including what was afterward owned by Dexter Bacon. He lived on this farm until 1850, when he sold to Mary Bacon and removed to Sparta, Morrow county, Ohio, and died there Nov. 20, 1850. He was married to Sarah Reding, Feb. 19, 1834. She was born in Ridgeville, Ohio, in 1816. She was the daughter of John and Betsy (Barnum) Reding. Her mother married, 2nd, Justin Sherman, of Wakeman, and the Sherman brothers, John and George, thus became her half brothers.
Sometime after the death of her husband, Sarah removed to Norwalk, Ohio, and subsequently to Clyde, Ohio, but died in Norwalk, May 20, 1876. She was an enthusiastic Sabbath School and temperance worker.

DUNHAM, Silas – bought land in Wakeman in 1833 and 1835 and sold it in 1836 to Bennett and Minot Pierce. He was married to Andromeda Bentley, Dec. 29, 1836. She inherited land in Ionia, Michigan, from her brother Benjamin and they made their home there. They had children, Edwin, Eldron, Ellen and Elnora.
DUNN, Michael - born in Ireland in 1833, came to Wakeman in 1852 and worked on the railroad, then being built. In 1861 he married Mary Conry, daughter of Thomas Conry, of Wakeman. He lived on a farm east of the village until his death Jan. 19, 1911. His children were:

DUNNING, Oliver - was a son of Cyrus Dunning and Sally Wheeler (a sister of Justus Wheeler, of Wakeman). He was born about 1824 and married Lucretia Wheeler, a daughter of Asa Wheeler, of Clarksfield and of another family than that of his mother. He lived near the south line of Wakeman near Jonah Martin’s.
In September 1854 he lost two sons by death, one six and the other one year of age. His father and brother lived just over the line in Clarksfield and in 1854 the three families removed to Nebraska.
EDWARDS, Aden - a one time resident of Gallia county, Ohio, came to Clarksfield about 1835 and later lived on the farm occupied later by James Murray. He was a cooper by trade. His son, William, died here in 1847, at the age of six, and his wife died here Dec. 24, 1848 at the age of fifty three. She was Betsy Crawford. He had other children:

ELLIOT, Henry - bought of Isaac Judson, 50 acres of Lot 5 in 1834. He or another of the same name, came to Wakeman in 1844, according to one account but probably 1834, and lived north of the village on the Orrin Lewis farm. We read that Richard G. Elliott (son of Henry) was born in Greenwood, N.Y. in 1827, came to Wakeman in 1834, and died here in 1867. Henry Elliott married Parthena Moore and had daughters Pamelia, Minerva, Sarah and Jane.
ELLIS, Freeman - a son of Cornelius and Eliza (Walker) Ellis, of Florence, was born Dec. 31, 1821. He married Oct. 31, 1841, Marinda, daughter of Martin Denman, of Townsend. They lived in Norwich, Huron Co., Ohio, then moved to Litchfield, and in 1848, to Wakeman on the Butler Road, then to Clarksfield, then to Townsend. He died Oct. 17, 1870. The wife died Sept. 20, 1888, at the age of sixty six. They had children:

Besides three who died in infancy.
ERSKIN, Howard - bought of Ira M. Wallace two acres of Lot 6 on the center road west of town, in 1857, and sold it to Mr. Talcott the next year. In 1857, his daughter, Esther, died at the age of thirteen. His son, Erastus, lived around here and enlisted in the army during the Civil war.
ESTA, Milo - lived in a house which stood across the road from where James Shafer used to live. His wife, Martha Ann, died here in 1850.
FAHY, Thomas – born in County Galway, Ireland, in 1836, came to the United States in 1855. In 1863, he married Margaret Fahy (no relative). She was born in 1842, came to Oberlin in 1859, and died in 1907.
Mr. Fahy came to own a number of farms east of Wakeman, and died at his home on the Butler Road in 1915. His children were Matthew, deceased; John, Martin and Thomas, living on different farms on the Butler Road; Mary (Murray), Patrick, living east of Wakeman, and James and William, deceased. The family name is now spelled Fay.
Mr. Fahy’s mother came to the United States in 1853 in search of her son, Martin, but she never found him. She died at the home of her son, Thomas, in 1883, at the age of 81 years.
FARRAND, Lester T. – a son of Thomas, was born in St. Albans, Vt., July 5, 1811. He came to Huron county in 1829. He was a millwright by trade. He was married to Elizabeth Hanford, of Wakeman, Nov. 16, 1835. In 1837 he bought of Garwood Camp a half interest in the sawmill on Brandy Creek, and must have purchased the other half interest later. In 1839, he sold a half interest to Justin Sherman and in 1842 sold him the remaining interest. He bought several small tracts of land. He owned and lived in, the house where David S. Clark afterward lived. In 1856 the family removed to Keokuk, Iowa, and in 1875 to Norwalk, Ohio. He died in Atkinson, Nebraska, May 5, 1887. The wife was born in 1812, and died in Norwalk in Oct. 1883. Their children were:

FISK, Jehiel - bought 60 acres of the north part of Lot 42 in 1830, and the north-east part of the same lot in 1833. He sold this whole tract, 79 acres, to Joel Adams in 1835. This was the Theodore Whitney farm.
FLETCHER, Smith - a son of Robert Fletcher, was born in the town of Lock, Cayuga county, New York, Sept. 30, 1830. In 1836 he came to Clarksfield with his parents, brothers and sisters. He was married to Eliza Weaver, Feb. 13, 1856. In 1862 they settled on a farm in Wakeman on the Butler Road on Lot 79, where a brick house was built. Here they spent the remaining years of their lives, he dying May 2, 1894, and she Sept. 20, 1913. She was born in Fulton county, N.Y., Aug. 25, 1835. They had children:

FLOWER, Isaac - was born in Warmster, England, March 4, 1810. He was married to Ann Stratton in 1844. They came to the United States about 1852, living in Oswego, N. Y., Cook’s Corners, Huron Co., Ohio, East Townsend, Ohio, and to Wakeman in 1862. He died Jan. 13, 1903. His wife died Dec. 8, 1896. Their children were: Emma, lived in Ft. Wayne, Ind.; Alfred, died in 1916; Ann died young; Sarah, who married Ben Barnes, and lives in Wakeman; Fred, who went to Oklahoma.
FORD, Michael – was born in County Galway, Ireland, Aug. 19, 1834. He came to Wakeman in 1857. In 1858 he bought of Daniel Chandler 48 acres of Lot 84 on the Butler Road. In 1863 he married Bridget Murray. He died at his home on the Butler Road, Oct. 20, 1888. They had children: John, deceased; Annie, married Thomas Dunn, of Wakeman, and lives at Cygnet, Ohio; Mary, who married John M. Burke, and lives in Wakeman.
FOSTER, Shelemith – born in Fairfield, Vt., May 14, 1808, came to Wakeman in 1853, and was living here in 1867. No further history obtainable.
