In 1822, the First Congregational Church was formed in the home of Captain
Pierce. Their creed leaned toward the Calvinistic belief. A more liberal
group from Oberlin influenced many of the congregation to accept their idea
of "Free Salvation". As a result the Second Congregational Church was
organized in 1844. The site of the building was on River Street where the
former home of Charles Clark, Jr. now stands.

The cornerstone of this present church edifice on Abbott Street was laid in
1877 and dedicated in January, 1879.

In 1974 the congregation celebrated its 130th anniversary. Our present
membership is 400, church school 100.

The first and Second Congregational Churches combine a history of 154
years here in the Wakeman Community.
