Lions Club
The first meeting of the Firelands Lion’s Club was held on October 22, 1957 at the Firelands high school to organize and elect officers.
The following officers were elected: President, Howard H. Radcliffe; 1st Vice President, James T. Hunter; 2nd Vice President, Cliff McDowell; 3rd Vice President, Louise E. Welton; Secretary, James V. Angelo; Treasurer, John P. Martin; Lion Tamer, Donald A. Wasem; Tail Twister, Andrew E. Cehlar; 2 year Director, Rev. George E. Bender; 2 year Director, Cletus A. Wasem; 1 year Director, Merril Peasley; 1 year Director, William H. Treat.
The District Governor, Sid Tennant, presented the charter to the club December 4, 1957 at the Firelands High School.
January 1958 the club decided to provide free eye examinations for the first three grades in the Firelands School District and in 1959 to sponsor projects to sell light bulbs, brooms made by the blind, Christmas trees and community calendar.
The Lions now sponsor eye examinations for all grades in the Firelands area.
The club has thirty active members and meets at the Birmingham Methodist Church the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.
