RESIDENT VICTIM OF PNEUMONIA - Casper Zackarias, aged 63 years, a victim
to an attack of pneumonia, died this morning at 4:30 o’clock at his
home, 110 Lilly street, following a brief illness. He was born in
Hungary, but has been a resident of this city for many years. He is
survived by a wife, four sons, Mike, of California, Paul, Jacob and
Matthew, two daughters, Lana and Catherine all of this city. Funeral
services will be conducted from St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Wednesday
morning at 8:30 o’clock, and burial will be made in the Mansfield

Randy B. Zappone - MANSFIELD - Randy B.
Zappone, 38, of 501 Glendale Blvd. died Saturday at Cleveland Clinic
after a long illness. Mr. Zappone was born Nov. 27, 1954 in
Mansfield, living here all his life. He was a service advisor for six
years, and technician for four years at Joyce Buick and Saturn of
Mansfield and a member of Buick Service Masters. Mr. Zappone won
several awards while he was an employee, including Service Masters
Award, Best in Class Award, Service Excellence Award, Image of
Excellence Award, and ASE Certified Master Mechanic. He graduated
from Madison Comprehensive High School in 1973 and had attended Holy
Trinity Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife, Connie Burns
Zappone; two daughters, Tiffany and Crissy Zappone; a son, Zachary
Zappone, all at home; his mother, Dorothy Lotz Zappone; two sisters and
brother-in-laws, Sally and Terry Houston of Mansfield and Brenda and Bob
Brakenwagon of Waterville; a brother, John Zappone Jr. of Mount Vernon;
and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was
preceded in death by his father, John Zappone. Calling hours will
be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Diamond Street Home of
Wappner Funeral Directors and one hour before the funeral services.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 p.m. at Holy Trinity
Lutheran Church by the Rev. George Lambert. Burial will be in Mansfield
Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity

James -- James Zehner, living three miles north of Shenandoah, died
Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 3 o'clock p.m., aged nearly 69 years. He had been
ill for about seven months with paralysis but the week preceding his
death had much trouble with his heart, which caused his death. He leaves
a wife, seven children and a twin sister, viz: J.F. Zehner, Roann, Ind.;
Samuel L. Zehner, Shenandoah; Mrs. Esther Schweyer, Shenandoah; Henry
Harmon Zehner, Cleveland; Mrs. Mary Ellen Cline, Shenandoah; Dora May
Latimer, Rome; Kate Wolford, Shenandoah; his twin sister, Mrs. Mary M.
Stoner, Paradise Hill. James Zehner was born in Milton township, Ashland
county, O. His father and mother died when he was but nine years old.
After their death he lived with his grandparents. At the age of 16 he
went to live with his uncle, Henry Zehner, with whom he worked at the
carpenter trade. In 1859 he was married to Miss Catharine Lutz, of
Milton township. He has been a faithful member of the Lutheran church
ever since the age of 15. Funeral services and burial at Shenandoah

Zeiters, John -- John Zeiters was born near Ganges, August 21, 1849,
and died Aug. 31, 1876, aged 27 years and 10 days. On the 4th. of
January, 1872, the deceased was married to Miss Jennie Lybarger.
He was industrious, and of good habits, the only son of his aged
parents, who deeply deplore his early death. Parents, a devoted
young wife and interesting little daughter, together with his only
sister and a large circle of relatives are left to mourn over his
departure. A very large congregation attended his funeral at the
London Church, where a sermon was preached by Rev. N.H. Loose. The
service was solemn and impressive, and it is hoped that this sad
bereavement will, in the providence of God, with its voice of warning,

Zellner, Albert -- Albert Zellner died last night at midnight, at
his home 205 South Franklin Avenue, after an illness of several weeks. He
was born at Newville, Oct. 20,1849, but lived in Mansfield the greater part
of his life. Mr. Zellner is survived by his wife, one son Lloyd, three
daughters, Mrs. Charles Beard, Mrs. Hobart Motter, and Mrs. Albert Simon
,six grandchildren, and one brother D. Zellner of Pittsburg. Mr. Zellner was
a member of the Owl Lodge. Funeral services will be held at the home

Monday. Allen Zellner, of near Lucas, was instantly killed about 2
o'clock Sunday morning by being thrown from a wagon in which he was
riding. Zellner had been to Lucas during the evening previous and
was returning home when the accident happened. He was driving a
young horse, which became frightened, and ran away, throwing him out and

Zellner,86 widow of Albert Zellner died at the home of her daughter, Mrs.
H.L.Motter, Woodville Road today after an illness of several weeks. A native of
Mansfield., Mrs. Zellner spent her entire life in this vicinity. She was a
charter member of the South Main Street Evangelical Church. Surviving are three
daughters, Mrs. C.C.Beard and Mrs. Motter of Mansfield and Mrs. Coral Simon of
Meadville, Pa.,a sister Miss Nora Cates of Mansfield, seven grandchildren and
six-great grandchildren. The body was removed to the Wappner Funeral Home where
services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Thursday with Rev. C.L.Kern of the South Main
Evangelical Church officating. Burial will be in the Mansfield Cemetery.

Mansfield – Forest Lytell Zellner, 61, of 588 Fifth Ave. died early this
morning in his home after an extended illness. He was born April 1,
1919, in Mansfield, living here all his life. Mr. Zellner was a 37-year
employee of White-Westinghouse and was a 21-year member of the Moose
Lodge. He was also a member of the IUE-AFL-CIO-CLC Union Local No. 711.
During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy. Surviving are his
wife, Edna Grace Zellner; three sons, James L., Kenneth W. and Gary O.,
all of Mansfield; one daughter, Karen K Tackett of Mansfield; 11
grandchildren; two great –grandchildren, and two brothers, Virgil
Zellner of Mansfield and Marion Zellner of Columbus. Funeral services
will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in the Diamond St. Home of Wappner Funeral
Directors, by the Rev. Duke Wallace, pastor of Woodville Grace Brethren
Church. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday afternoon and

12, 1841. He lived on the farm but was an apprentice to the harness trade. He
did this for 61 years. He had a harness shop on North Diamond Street. He
was in the 163 O.V.I. and served the entire period of the Civil War.He was
a township trustee and infirmary director. He is survived by wife and 2 daug.

following a brief illness. Mrs. ZELLNER was born April 21, 1881, near Mr. Zion in Richland County, and always lived in this vicinity.
She was a member of the First English Lutheran Church, and Ruth Chapter 17, Order of the Easter Star. Surviving besides her

Zellner, Grace -- A double
tragedy occurred this morning about 4:45 o'clock at Miss Josephine Stevenson's
boarding house at the corner of East Fourth and Diamond Streets, when Miss Grace
R. Zellner, a most highly respected young lady, was foully murdered by her
sweetheart, Roy A. Shank, formerly of Ashland, who, after murdering her, shot
himself in the forehead, death in his case being almost instantaneous.

Zent, David W. -- David W. Zent was born on his
father's farm about two miles west of Bellville, March 9, 1827, and died at
Evansville, Ind., July 10, 1903, aged 76 years, 4 months and 1 day. On
Dec. 25, 1856, he was united by marriage to Miss Mary Ann Olin with whom he
lived until Nov. 27, 1903, when she was called away by death. To this
union four children were born Laura, Schuylor W., Wilbur D. and Jessie
Gertrude. Laura died Sept. 11, 1864. He labored on the farm until
about 21 years of age when he went to Wells County, Ind. He was one of the
first four white settlers of the county and the first clerk of Jefferson
Twp. He pre-empted land in this part of the county and gave the township
its name, after Jefferson Twp. in Richland. He returned in 1849 and worked
at carpentering about seven years. He brought the first telegraphic
instrument to Bellville, and learned to operate it. In 1857 he and his
brother, John, purchased the elevator in Bellville, of Taylor Moody, and from
that time he made Bellville his home until about eight months ago, when he went
to Evansville, Ind., to spend the remainder of his earthly life with his son,
Schuylor. Mr. Zent possessed many commendable traits of character, but
like all other men was subject to mistakes, disappointments and reverses.
He was industrious and enjoyed laboring with his hands to the very last.
Death was the result of a stroke of paralysis and came suddenly and
unexpectedly. He leaves two sons and one daughter; two brothers,
Sampson of Fredericktown, O., and Isaac of Deadwood, Cal., also three sisters,
Mrs. J.W. Geddes, of Bellville, Mrs. Jno. Klotz of Waterford, and Mrs. H. Faus,
of Denver, Col., to mourn his departure. A funeral service was held in the
Universalist church Sunday afternoon at 1:30, conducted by Elder H.H.

died at the residence of her sister, Mrs. Lucy S. Oldfield, at Atlanta, Ga.,
Sunday, Sept. 28, 1884, after years of great suffering, aged 73 years, 2 months
and 20 days. Her ailment is believed to have been internal abscess, of one
or more organs. Her burial took place Oct. 1st., and was largely
attended. Dr. Kendall, of the Trinity M.E. church conducted the funeral
services, preaching from the words: "For I reckon the sufferings of
this present life are not to be compared to the glory which shall be revealed in
us." She had been anxiously awaiting the time of her departure and
was prepared for the journey to the home over there. She was born in New
York State, and came to Ohio in 1824, living many years in this vicinity, where
relatives and friends still reside. Her removal to Georgia occurred about

Zerby, Mrs. William -- Within a stone's throw of
her own home and family, Mrs. William Zerby, of East Third Street, was struck
and instantly killed by a Pennsylvania shifter at the East Third Street
crossing, yesterday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. <details of the accident
omitted> Mrs. Zerby was 29 years old and leaves her husband and four small
children, Louis, John, Glenn and Fred. The latter is only about two years
old. She also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Joseph Parrott and the Misses
Elizabeth and Blanche Wagner. She was a steadfast member of the Lutheran
church and was well known in church circles. The funeral will be held

Ziegler, Daniel -- John Ziegler, Sr.,
and his nephew Daniel Ziegler, died a week ago last Tuesday, near Rome,
and were both buried on the same day. Two cases of sun stroke
occurred during the funeral services. Mr. E.M. Chew, son of Judge
Chew, deceased, and Miss Minerva Miller. Both have recovered.

Ziegler, John Sr. -- John Ziegler was
born in Perry County, Ohio, October 3, 1808. Departed this life,
September 1, 1874 -- aged 65 years, 10 months and 27 days. The
call to depart was sudden, having been ill but a few days. The
bereaved wife, children and relatives deeply mourn in this the dark hour
of their affliction. Many years ago, he became a member of the
Reformed Church under the ministry of Rev. S.B. Leiter. He was a
respected and successful citizen. His funeral, September 2, was
very numerously attended. On the afternoon of the same day, a
nephew [Daniel Ziegler] of his was also buried. To the large
family connection, the voice of death has sadly and severely come,
calling upon all earnestly to apply their health unto wisdom. --

Ziegler, Nicholas J. -- MANSFIELD --
Nicholas J. Ziegler, 88, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007. Nicholas died at
his residence surrounded by his loving family. Born Dec. 19,
1918, in Ebendorf, Romania, he was the son of George and Elizabeth Swick
Ziegler. He was a 1937 graduate of Ontario High School where he was
active in the first championship basketball tournament for the Ontario
High School. His team made up of mostly farm boys enjoyed the new
experience of the hotel by staying up all night, turning the light
switches on and off, taking showers and flushing toilets. They filled up
on all the delicious food in the hotel restaurant. After the fun of the
night before, the exhausted team lost the game. He loved all kinds of
sports, but his favorite was baseball. At one time, he held the record
for the longest hit home run at Liberty Park. He was granted a
scholarship at Ashland College but had to decline as his family needed
his financial assistance. He followed St. Peter's basketball team and
was an usher for many years. He parked cars for the Madison Home
football games and enjoyed their games. His favorite college team was
the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. He retired from the Tappan
Company and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. His Catholic
faith was very important to him. He was past president of Independent
Stove Workers Union, past treasurer of Tappan Credit Union, a member of
the Quarter Century Club and a member of the Sons of Herman. He
married Pauline Magdeline Studer on Aug. 8, 1943, and she survives.
Pauline has had Alzheimer's for the last 16 years, and Nick was her
caregiver for all but the last 2 1/2 years. He will be sadly
missed by his five children who are very important to him: two
daughters, Judy (Gerald) Phillips of Galion and Mary (Peter) Leicht of
Mansfield; three sons, Larry (Emily) Ziegler, John (Marlene) Ziegler and
Robert Ziegler, all of Mansfield; 14 grandchildren and 12
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a

-- MANSFIELD –Former Mansfield resident Walter H.
“Bud” Ziegler Jr., 75, died in Kettering Sunday, Oct. 29, 1996. He
was born Dec 21, 1919 in Turtle Creek, Pa. He same to Mansfield at a
young age when his father became chief of police at Westinghouse. He
graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1938. He graduated from
Ohio Wesleyan University in 1942 and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta
fraternity. During World War II and the Korean War, he served with the
Air Force, retiring in 1956 as a major. He retired in 1991 after more
than 40 years with Lincoln Natiional Life Insurance Co. He was a
member of George Marshall Lodge F&AM, Scottish Rite, Antioch
Shrine, Dayton Optimist Club, Dayton Liederkranz Society, Fairmont
Presbyterian Church, and American Legion Post 598. He is survived by a
son, Bruce E. Ziegler of Kettering; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy Z.
and Richard H. Mead of Fort Washington, Md; a good friend, Carole
Wimer of Dayton; two grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law,
Dr. John W. and Kay Ziegler of Marco Island, Fla. Memorial

- Shiloh - Mrs. Harriett Zigler, 93, Shiloh's oldest resident died
at her home here Thursday evening, after a long illness. She was a
Richland county resident her entire life, and was a member of the
Mt. Hope Lutheran church here. She was a charter member of the
Angelus Chapter No. 322 OES. Mrs. Zigler also was a charter member
of the Past Matrons of the Tenth District, OES. Surviving are
one daughter, Miss Ollie Zigler, of Shiloh; one grandson, Dean
Hamman, Shiloh, RD2, and one great granddaughter. Services will be
held in the McQuate Funeral home Monday at 2 p.m. Rev. Bruce Young
of Shelby will officiate and burial will be in the Mt. Hope
Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home. The family has

discourse. A postmortem examination of the body of the deceased was held
on the 10th., by Dr. McMahon, Drs. Austin and Lydy assisting, and almost every

Zimmerman, Jesse --
Jesse Zimmerman was killed near Newville yesterday afternoon in a most
peculiar and shocking manner by a tree falling against him. The
particulars of the sad accident are about as follows: Mr.
Zimmerman and John Paulin were engaged in cutting down trees and had
just finished sawing one nearly through. Mr. Paulin stepped
backward when the tree began to fall, Mr. Zimmerman stepping to one
side. The top of the tree in falling caught in the branches of
another, throwing the butt of the fallen tree off its stump, striking
Mr. Zimmerman squarely in the breast and pinning him to another tree
near by. The result was that death was almost instantaneous.
Mr. Zimmerman's chest was completely crushed, all his ribs being broken
from his spine. Mr. Paulin secured aid and had the body removed to
the dead man's house. The funeral will be held at Bunker Hill
church, Sunday morning, at 11 o'clock. The deceased was about 45
years of age and leaves a wife and four children to mourn his sudden

Zimmerman, 72, of 237 N. Brookwood Way died Monday evening at her home
after an extended illness. Mrs. Zimmerman was born August 13, 1920, in
Mansfield, and lived here all her life. She was active in the Fraternal
Order of Police Auxiliary and was a secretary to Glenwood/Parkwood Blvd
Association for many years. Surviving are her husband, Roger C.
Zimmerman of Mansfield; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard E & Margo
Rowen of Lexington; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Bud Essick
and Sandy and Roger Powers, all of Mansfield; two stepsons, Douglas A
Zimmerman of Stuttgart, AR and Roger L Zimmerman of Lexington; a
stepdaughter, Carol E Flood of St Petersburg, Fl; a brother and
sister-in-law, Robert M and Carol McLaughlin of Griffin, GA; six
grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents,
Harvey and Helen Zediker McLaughlin. Calling hours will be tonight from
7 to 9 at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, where
services will be held Thursday at 10:30 am by the Re. Carl Cunfer.

-- Thursday last Matthew Zimmerman died very suddenly at the
residence of his son-in-law, Robert Meyer, at No. 97 Spring Mill
Street. He arose early and built the fire and was in apparent good
health. At about eight o'clock he spoke of feeling ill and Mrs.
Meyer wanted to send for a physician, but he remonstrated. He lay on
the sofa and said he felt much better. Mrs. Meyer then went to the
summer kitchen to perform some household duties. About one half hour
later she heard a noise from the house, and on entering found the old
gentleman lying on the bed with life extinct. He had taken his
eighteen-month old grandchild with him to bed as it was a favorite of
his. The child raised the alarm. Dr. Studer was summoned who
decided that he died from heart disease. The funeral will take place
Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Services will be held at St. Peter's
Catholic Church. He was aged 68 years and 10 months.

A. (George) -- Rich has been the harvest of the Great Reaper in the
passing months in our city. It is the inexorable fate of the race that
all must respond to the dread summons, young or old, sooner or later, yet in
our little city, located on the high lands of Ohio, near the summit, where
break and flow the waters in south and north, health is so conserved that with
us tis the old who die. We have chronicled the demise of many such as
1897 sped away, and the new year attests the fact, that the old can not win
the race with Death. In the early morning on the 18th. inst. Mary A.,
beloved wife of Levi Zimmerman, died full of years and labors. Swiftly
sped the arrow, kindly, for quickly was ended the prolonged life, a life
complete in love and devotion to humanity. She was a daughter of a
pioneer of Ohio, the grand-daughter of a soldier of the revolution, on her
paternal side, while her maternal ancestors and her own mother were
Friends. A Quaker by birth-right was she. Mrs. Zimmerman was born
on the farm in Knox County, Ohio, near Gregg's Mills, not far from the village
of Fredericktown, Oct. 6, 1815, of her parents John and Mary Gregg
George. The place of her birth was then on the border of the
civilization of the white man, and the waning life of the red men of the
forest. When a wee child her mother hid her and an elder sister safe
away in a cave, on the approach of the Indian warriors. As she grew to
young womanhood she found her home again on the borders in Crawford County,
near the eastern edge of the last Indian reservation in Ohio, that of the Wyandotte.
Surely Mrs. Zimmerman was a pioneer. Of her father's immediate family,
of five sons and three daughters, only the daughters have departed into the
unseen country. Her brothers survive, one in Iowa in his 87th. year, one
in the great valley of San Joaquin, in California, in his 85th. year, one in
the new state of Washington, near the bright waters of Puget Sound, in his
74th. year, a fourth in Oregon, aged 76 years, and the youngest of the five,
and he is in his 69th., high up in the mountains in Inyo County, California,
the name of which county was suggested by his elder brother, to the
legislature of California, when the county was formed. Her elder sister,
Abigail, died August last, at the advanced age of 86, in our city, and her
younger sister, Vilinda, in 1888, met death in the way, at her home in
Iowa. It is a remarkable fact that four of these sons -- brothers of
Mrs. Zimmerman, notwithstanding their birthright of peace by their mother's
blood -- Quakers -- were soldiers; for the blood of the paternal
ancestor, coursed in their veins and controlled them, at least so far as to
cause them to be actively patriotic when war's dread alarms were sounded, and
when the wars were over all became quickly quiet citizens of the
Republic. In November, 1835, she and her now bereaved husband were
married at Bucyrus, O., where she was living. A married life of over two
and sixty years. Seldom is it vouchsafed to the sons and daughters of
men so long to live husband and wife. She came to Mansfield a
bride; she entered on all the duties of life with a zest; she
recognized her obligation of love and obedience to her Father in Heaven, and
immediately connected herself in the Methodist Episcopal church, of Mansfield,
which branch of the church she joined at Bucyrus in her 16th. year, and at her
death she was the oldest member of its communion in Mansfield. How much
has she seen of our progress as a village -- and city -- a hamlet only in 1835
-- very much of a city in 1898. Year after year have the friends of her
young life been called away, yet she and the husband of her youth remained
active in every good work, even to the last day of her life, in some measure
for some years laid aside from more aggressive work -- in her home she
continued ever to plan for some additional good to her fellow men and women.
The home was her domain and she its beauteous queen, blessed in the natural
gifts, her acquirements beyond the average in her day and generation, a lover
of good literature, a close student of the Book of Books, her knowledge
thereof was large, her judgment seldom at fault, and her whole life
pure. Universally known by the men and women of Mansfield in the years
of her activity, and as universally respected and beloved, and though as the
city grew in population and her age advanced, it was a physical impossibility
for even one good woman to know the wants of the sick and weary, and to add to
the comforts of the poor, yet Mother Zimmerman did blessed work up to the
closing of the day before her departure. --

6 of whom with the wife and mother preceded him to the eternal world,
leaving one son to mourn his absence. The funeral took place on the 11th,
conducted by Rev. Shulenberger, and the mortal body was laid to rest in
the Cemetery at
Mt.
Bethel
church. In to the hands of the covenant keeping god, we commit the living

Zorger,
Wilminah (Sneck) -- Wilminah Sneck was born March 26th 1815 near
Stabart Germany, married Frederich Zorger August 11th 1839 and died May
30th 1892, aged 77 years, 2 months and 4 days. She was the mother of eight
children, 4 sons and 4 daughters, seven of whom preceded her to the
eternal world, leaving the husband, one son and his family, and one sister
to mourn her absence. In the year 1862 the deceased joined the
United Brethren church under the pastorate of Rev. Mt. Gomery, in which
she continued faithful unto death, though for a number of years, on
account of declining health, was deprived of the privileges of the church.
She bore her late affliction with Christian patience, calmly waiting the
time of her departure, assured that to be absent in the body was to be
present with the Lord. The funeral took place on the 1st, conducted
by Rev. Shulenberger, the services being held in the
Mt.
Bethel
church, and the body laid to rest in the cemetery nearby. These solemn and
impressive services, to which the living are called so frequently and
which are so full of meaning as related to time and eternity are liable to
be treated with indifference, on the part of many; whereas they are
intended to do the living good, in the way of preparing them to live and
die happy. Unto Him who loved us, and gave Himself a sacrifice that we
might live and not die; we point you, in the midst of all your sorrows,
for He is able to save to the uttermost all who put their trust in Him.

John -- Mansfield. John Zvara, 81, of 475 South Diamond St., died
at his home Wednesday morning following an extended illness. He was born
Jan. 30, 1892 in Hungary, and lived here most of his life. Mr. Zvara
was a retired coal miner. Surviving are his wife, Mary Wargo Zvara; and
a number of nieces and nephews. Services will be held in the Wappner
Funeral Home Friday at 2:30 p.m. by Dr. J. Calvin Winder, pastor of the
First United Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Crawford County
Memory Gardens. Friends may call this afternoon and evening. Submitted
