Information

The United States has conducted a census of its population every ten years since 1790. The resulting records are useful in identifying family members. Censuses before 1850 only include the name of the head of the household with other family members represented by statistics broken down by age and gender. Beginning in 1850, the name of each member of the household was recorded along with ages and places of birth. Each subsequent census included more detailed information. Of particular note is the 1900 census which included the actual month and year of birth of each person enumerated. Records for each census are currently made available to the public 72 years after the census was taken. The most recent available census records are for 1920.

There was no 1790 census taken in the Northwest Territory area that was to later become the state of Ohio. Censuses for 1800 and 1810 were conducted in Ohio, but only records for Washington County survive. Presumably any individuals living in 1800 in the area that was to later become Logan County would have been counted in Hamilton or Ross County. In 1810, people living in the area that was to later become Logan County would have been enumerated in Champaign County from which Logan County was formed in 1818. Census records for Logan County exist for the period from 1820 to 1920 with the exception of 1890 which was destroyed by fire in 1921.

Original Records on Microfilm

The surviving census records have been microfilmed by the National Archives and are available for sale. Census records covering Logan County can be found at the Allen County Public Library, the LDS Family History Library, the Logan County District Library, the Logan County Genealogical Society Library, the Ohio Historical Society Library, and the State Library of Ohio as well as many other libraries.
