C. C. MALTBIE, CONSTABLE 29 YEARS, DIES
In
ill health for some time, Charles C. Maltbie, well-known Spanish
American War veteran who had served as Geneva constable for the past 29
years, died at Community Hospital at 2:50 a.m. today. He was 79 years
old.
A life-long resident of Geneva, Mr. Maltbie was born here November 29,
1963. After attending the local elementary school, he enrolled and was
graduated from the old Geneva Normal School. In 1882 he started three
years of college study at Oberlin University.
Mr. Maltbie had become one of the community's most widely known
citizens, from his early activity as a base viol player in orchestras
here through his career as Geneva constable. In 1886 "Charlie," as he
was called, played the instrument as a member of the orchestra at the
old Cleveland Opera House.
Mr. Maltbie served as a first lieutenant in Company E of the 5th O. V.
I. regiment in the Spanish-American war. He later was a second
lieutenant in the old Company E of the Geneva Grays, the local National
Guard contingent.
For several years after the war he was employed by the Champion Machine
Co., of Springfield, O., traveling throughout Ohio and western
Pennsylvania setting up binders. Later he worked as a brakeman on the
old Lake Shore Railroad.
In 1914, Mr. Maltbie was appointed to fill the then vacant Geneva constable's post. Since that time he held the job constantly.
Mr. and Mrs. Maltbie, who survives, were united in marriage on Christmas Day, 1890, in Geneva.
Surviving in addition to his widow are two daughters, Mrs. Ruth
Walworth of Delmar, N. Y., and Mrs. Mary Williams of Oberlin; one son,
Dr. Kenneth Maltbie of Youngstown; six grandchildren, one great
grand-daughter.
Funeral arrangements are being made by the Landon Funeral Home.
