Listings with the abbreviation NZHPT are a collection of Historic Buildings & Sites within the Otago Region that are owned or administered by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust (NZHPT).

The Historic Places Trust is an independent statutory body, est. 1980 for the purpose of identifying, classifying and preserving historic places, and fostering a public interest in them.

First Church. Built 1868-1873 in a Norman-Gothic design, from Oamaru Stone.
Features include interior stone carvings, and a spire that reaches 175 feet in height.

Larnach Castle. Otago Peninsula - Built 1871 as the private residence of William Larnach ( at the then cost of 150,000 pounds ).
Features magestic views of the Otago Harbour and etched Venetian glass, interior stone carvings, and Victorian furnishings. Nicknamed "The Camp" by the Larnach family.

Olveston. A thirty five roomed Jocobean style mansion - Built 1904-06 as the private residence of David Theomin.
Features rare antiques, paintings, and furniture as well as a magestic oak staircase.

Dunedin Railway Station. Built 1904 of Blue Stone. The architect was George Troup.
Features moasic tiled floors, copper lined tower with heraldic lions and ornate scrolls.

Maerewhenua Rock Shelter. Located at Dansey's Pass Road (South of Duntroon). Rock Drawings in Red Ochre and Charcoal under limestone overhangs. Area used by early local Maori as shelter. (NZHPT)

Takiroa Rock Shelter. (off Highway 83). Rock drawing dating back to the Moa Hunters period (approx. 500 years ago). (NZHPT)

Otago Goldfields Park. 20 historic sites related to the early goldmining, scattered
throughout Otago.

Maheno Clarks Flour Mill. Restored machinery in working order. Flour was produced here from 1867 to 1977. Vintage machinery museum and work-shop. (NZHTP)

Mosgiel
East Taieri Presbyterian Church. Flemish Style building erected in double brick in 1869.
Features include windows depicting Christ among pioneer families, and maps and equipment of the area.

Oamaru Totara Estate. 8km South of Oamaru. The first export of Frozen Meat from New Zealand (in 1882) was prepared here. Features restored Limestone Farm Buildings. Displays illustrate the History of Totara Estate and of the Frozen Meat Industry. (NZHPT)

Ophir Ophir Post Office. Small stone Building, built in 1886 to service the goldfields town. (NZHTP)

Hayes Engineering Works. Turn-of-the-Century rural engineering works. Mud & Brick

Waikouaiti Matakana Farm Buildings. Built 1842-43, and are the oldest surviving wooden buildings in the South Island, and include stable, storehouse, grainory and school house. ( NZHPT )

The Cuddy. Cud Cottage, constructed in 1854 of Totara slabs and Cob, thatched with snow-grass.
