Pelham includes the villages of Pelham and Pelham Manor.
Pelham "... appears to have been purchased from the Indians some time previous to the year 1666 by Thomas Pell, and by him called Pelham, an old English name composed of Pel (remote) and Ham (mansion). By Governor Nichols it was granted and confirmed, in 1666, "To Thomas Pell, Esq., of Fairfield in Connecticut, together with the island adjacent and all its privileges," and erected into "an enfranchised township or manor" and secured to him and his heirs."

The Westchester County Historical Society also has extensive manuscripts giving inventories of many old cemeteries located throughout the County. Also check with the local historical society for information about the above cemeteries.

Atlas of the City of Mount Vernon and the Town of Pelham: compiled from official records, personal surveys, and other private plans and surveys. [Mount Vernon, NY: John F. Fairchild, 1908]. Copy available at the New York Public Library's Map Division.
The Sanborn Map Company has issued Insurance maps of the town of Pelham which comprises North Pelham, Pelham, and Pelham Manor and the town of Eastchester which includes the villages of Bronxville and Tuckahoe, New York. [1932], a copy of which is available in the Map Division of the New York Public Library. Insurance maps were detailed to the point of showing each building on each street so that insurance companies knew what to pay the insurer in the event of fire or destruction.
Many town historical societies hold maps of their vicinities, including copies of the Sanborn insurance maps. Be sure to inquire at such institutions as well as at local libraries.

Dr. Alvah H. Doty — Health Officer of the Port of New York from 1895 to 1912 and from 1913 until his retirement in 1933 as medical director of the Western Union Telegraph company. Appointed an inspector on the staff of the Health Officer of the Port, he subsequently was made diagnostician of the New York Board of Health, and then chief of its Bureau of Contagious Diseases. Further testimony to the efficiency of Dr. Doty's administration was furnished by a special commission sent to the world's leading ports, which concluded that the system of quarantine under Dr. Doty at Hoffman, Swinburne and Ellis Islands was the best in the world. Besides his work in guarding Americans from diseases brought by immigrants, Dr. Doty added immensely to the metropolis by ridding Staten Island of mosquitos (sic), an ancient pest which he combated successfully in a six-year campaign.
