Preservation

Staten Island cemeteries are a valuable source of both family and community history and as such, need to be preserved. Many cemeteries have already been abandoned or are falling victim to the ravages of time and nature. Fortunately, there is an increasing public awareness that something must be done to preserve this history for future generations. Friends Of Abandoned Cemeteries of Staten Island (FACSI) has and continues to be a leader in these efforts. Recently, we have become aware of other organizations who have joined in this effort. If you would like to help or just want to know which cemeteries these organizations support, please contact them directly. • A note of caution regarding status of church cemeteries: (Thanks to FACSI) Generally, churches did not apply to the State for a charter. When abandoned, these cemeteries, therefore, were not the State's responsibility but the responsibility of the township - in our case, New York City. The City is overwhelmed with the problem of abandoned cemeteries and contacting the Real Estate Division of New York City about Abandoned cemeteries is a fairly useless exercise, although the agency is commonly cited as the governing authority. In a case where a cemetery is 'State regulated' - this is to say it is incorporated, the state audits the cemetery's books, and responds to complaints by the public.
