The principle objective of the Livingston County Historical Society, as outlined in its Constitution and Acquisitions Policy, are "to procure, preserve, and display in a museum, articles which relate to the history of Livingston County, and to promote interest in, and appreciation of, the county's splendid heritage."

A bronze plaque in the vestibule of the museum states that the Livingston County Historical Society was founded in 1876. The Society holds the distinction of being one of the oldest organizations of its kind in Western New York. Incorporated in 1877, the Historical Society has functioned continuously since its founding and has a large membership.

The Historical Society is an educational institution under the University of the State of New York, and is, therefore, a tax-exempt organization. Contributions are deductible for tax purposes. There is a Memorials program through which members and friends may contribute.

The Historical Society will also be happy to arrange group tours of the museum for other days and times to accommodate any organization. Please call (716) 243-2281 for scheduling.

In celebrating the 125th anniversay, the society has some special surpises and new contributions to share with the public.

About the Livingston County (NY) Historical Society:
    Current Exhibitions:
Livingston County Historical Society/Livingston County Historian. What's the difference?:
The Livingston County Historical Society is an organization made up of private individuals interested in the history of Livingston County. We are charted by the State of New York, but are not a government enity. We maintain a museum in the town of Geneseo and we host programs or lectures at the museum throughout the year. We have many displays, but we do not have much in the way of research or reference materials.

The Livingston County Historian is Ms. Patrica Schaap and she is employed by Livingston County. Ms. Schaap has her County Historian office in the same building as the Livingston County Historical Society, but we are two different organizations. The County Historian's office contains census & naturalization records, news clipping, micro-film and a large collection of maps, local history books, etc. At this time, the County Historian does not have a web-site, but can be reached by mail or phone. (see Livingston County Town Historical Societies link below) or to see what information is available at the Historian's office click on the following link (coursety of GenWeb Livingston County web-site)
