William Wallace Tyler

Union Soldier - Distinguished Service

William Wallace Tyler was born in the village of Sackets Harbor New York in 1838. He was the son of Dr. William Tyler. He went by the name of Wallace William, or Wallace. Wallace Tyler age 23, enlisted in Company E of the 94th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment on October 14, 1861 in Hounsfield. He was at the battles of Cedar Mountain, 2nd Manassas (or 2nd Bull Run), Antietam, and Fredericksburg. Here he received a wound in the right ankle. The wound was serious enough that he was mustered out of the regular infantry, and enrolled in the Veterans Reserve Corps, where he remained through the end of the Civil War. He was discharged from service on March 19, 1863. Wallace and Miss Mary Ann Gratz were married in 1866.

At this time, 1866, the 9th US Cavalry was being formed in New Orleans Parish Louisiana. Sometime during the year, 1866-1867, Lieutenant Tyler joined the 9th (Troop I) in Louisiana. In 1881, Lieutenant Tyler was transferred to the 13th US Infantry Regiment stationed at Fort Wingate, and promoted to rank of Captain.

Captain Tyler continued in the army serving in one branch or another until February of 1891, when he retired after 35 years of service. Upon his retirement he was promoted to the rank of Major, "by an act of Congress", and returned to his hometown of Sackets Harbor, New York. He died in 1924.
