VETERAN OF 94TH INFANTRY IS DEAD

Zimron B. Merriam Passes Away at his Home in Goodale Street

Zimron B. Merriam, well known Civil war veteran and carpenter of this city, died at 11 this morning at his home, 223 Goodale street, following a long il lness, aged 78 years and eight months. He had been in poor health since last winter although his health improved this spring and he was able to work a little. During the past week his condition had been critical. He was born in Redfield and spent his early life in Dexter.

He enlisted when 18 years of age, Oct 30, 1861, at Brownville, to serve three years in the 94th Infantry and was mustered in as private of Company E, Dec. 9, 1861. He reenlisted as a veteran Jan. 4, 1864, and was promoted to Corporal Nov. 2, 1864 and later to Sergeant Feb. 1, 1865. He was mustered out with the detachment, June 10, 1865 , near Washington, D. C. He returned to Dexter where he lived up to 31 years ago, following the trade of a carpenter, and coming to this city where he had since resided . He had been employed in the construction of many of the buildings in this city and worked on some building or residence in practically every street in the city.

He was married three times, first to Esther Dunmore, and later to Augusta Smythe, and one year ago in July, 1917, was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Marion Squires of this city. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Merriam of this city, and four daughters by his first wife, Mrs. W. J. Van Winkle, Mrs. B. J. Nellis, Mrs.S. Kerr, all of this city and Mrs. William Farr of Black River, and two sons, W. J. Merriam of Brownville, E. B. Merriam of Port Colburn, Ont. , Canada, and three children by h i s second wife, Charles Merriam of Camp F unston , Kansas, and two daughters, Jessie Merriam of Vermont and Miss Clara G. Merriam of this city. He also has a half brother, Elisha Farmer of Utica.

He was a member of Joe Spratt Post 323 G . A. R.

The funeral will be held at 2:30, Sunday afternoon from the residence, Rev. Frank Anderson, pastor, of First Baptist church, officiating. Interment will be in Dexter ceme tery.
