John H. Archer

Union Soldier - Distinguished Service

John H. Archer, son of John S. Archer, and Harriet E. Baylis, was born September 9, 1843. In 1862 he enlisted in Company H, 94th New York Volunteer Infantry, and participated in the battles of second Bull Run, Antietam, and others. In 1864 he re-enlisted in Company L, 18th New York Cavalry, and served to the close of the war. He married Libby, daughter of George W. and Catharine (Miller) Neiss, September 6, 1868, by whom he had had four children, viz.: Charles R., who died in infancy; George B., born March 27, 1871; Nellie May, born March 31, 1873; and Flora I., who died in 1881. After the war he was employed in mills and as a clerk in stores, kept hotel in Delta, Oneida County, NY and the Frontier House at Sackets Harbor NY. In the spring of 1888 he purchased the hotel at Adams, NY. He died February 23, 1920 in Adams, NY., and was buried in Brooks Cemetery, Watertown, NY.

ARCHER - In Adams, Feb. 23, 1920, John Henry Archer, aged 75 years. Funeral Thursday afternoon at 2, from the home. Rev. Frederick R. Griffiths of the Methodist Episcopal church officiating. Body will be placed in the Rural cemetery vault to await \f0 i\f2 nterment at Brookside cemetery, Watertown, in the spring.
