BORDEN

Mary Borden Taylor Fri Mar 10 14:07:54 2006
I am looking for information about my grandfather, Joseph W. BORDEN. His name is listed in the 1920 census for Green Township in Chenango County. He was 73 years old in 1920 and was working for wages as a watch repairer. My father, Parker G. BORDEN, his only son, was living in California when Joseph died a few years later. Parker died in 1947 when I was only 15 and I never learned anything about my Grandfather except his name. I am assuming that he died in Chenango County and thought perhaps that he is buried there or that his death might be recorded in some document there and might even tell who his parents were. I would greatly appreciate any infomation that you may have.

Joseph married Mary Ann (BARBER) CHAMPLAIN from Downsville in Delaware county in 1878 but they lived separately most of their married life. Joseph was her 2nd husband. Mary Ann is buried beside her first husband, a Dr. CHAMPLAIN, in Downsville.

Looking for information on the MERRIHEW family of Chenango Co, NY. I have them in Sherburne, Norwich, Four Corners, etc. I can't seem to find them in the cemetery listings here online.

BECKWITH

GMFree Sat Apr 8 19:12:23 2006
Mary was born about 1869 in Lewis County to Nancy BERCIER. She was adopted by a SMITH family. She married a Will BECKWITH in Oneida County and in Camden, Oneida County in 1889 had a daughter Maude BECKWITH who married a Fred P. BOWDISH of IA.

Mary separated, apparently, from BECKWITH and moved to Norwich. So far I have been able to verify about everything relating Mary and her family that was given to me verbally. The one exception is finding any info about Mary in Norwich. By 1900 she apparently had left her family. Other than Mary's marriage and the birth of Maude I have hit a stonewall.

BROWN - DAVISON

Donna Burdick Wed Apr 26 12:26:12 2006
I believe that the Charles W. BROWN who appears in the 1880 Census in the Town of Oxford may have been the son of Charles L. BROWN and his wife Esther A. of Madison County. Charles W. is age 30 in 1880 and is listed as a lawyer. His wife is Angie B., age 33, and their daughter Marion is age 3. Also I think the daughter was named for Charles W.'s sister, Marion (BROWN) DAVISON who lived in Sherburne. Would like confirmation of this theory if possible. Thank you.

DAVIS - SKINNER

Gail - Judy Thu May 18 14:21:19 2006
We are seeking information on the parents of Joseph SKINNER b. c1790's or earlier at R. I. He died in 1849 the same year as his brother-in-law, Andrew DAVIS b. October 9, 1831, d. August 9, 1849. Joseph SKINNER married Julia DAVIS b. c1809, d. August 19, 1881, daughter of Oliver DAVIS b c1781. at R. I., d. April 29, 1878 at Columbus, PA and Temperance [?] DAVIS b. c1788, d. December 27, 1878 at Columbus, PA.

Oliver, Temperance, Andrew and Julia all share the same grave stone and are buried at Columbus, PA, in the West Lawn Cemetery of which we do have pictures of. It is pure spectulation that possibley Joseph and Andrew may have died together and only Andrew DAVIS' body may have been recovered and buried. West Lawn Cemetery only has this record pertaining to Joseph SKINNER: "during the summer of 1951 a lady copied the inscriptions from the headstones for the Warren Library Historical Group...listed...one stone in this lot worn away except for the word "Father", this most likely was a stone for Joseph SKINNER, there are no other stones in this lot at this time."

Note the following from the 1896 Nelson Biographical Dictionary and Historical Reference Book of Erie County, PA: "Joseph SKINNER was a native of Rhode Island in 1800 and came to Chenango County, NY with his parents, where they both died. In 1826 he came to Erie County and settled eighty acres of land, part of which lies within the city limits of Corry, PA where he followed farming and lumbering. He was married to Julia DAVIS , also a native of Rhode Island. To them were born eleven children. This gentlemen was the first permanent settler of the city of Corry."

We are looking for Joseph SKINNER'S parents and any siblings that may have been born. Also where his parents may have been born and buried. In the Chenango website, there is mention of only one SKINNER that we could find, Amasa SKINNER, under wills 12/5/1831 C 71. Also a Betsy SKINNER 5/24/1859 F 207.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. We have a lot of info on the eleven children and would be very willing to share if someone is also researching this SKINNER / DAVIS family.
Thank you

Comment: re Scott B. LEWIS, whose bio appears at http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/chenango/1898-l.htm#6
Scott B.-7 LEWIS (Henry Welcome-6, Nathaniel-5, Israel-4, Nathaniel-3, Israel-2, John-1 of Westerly, RI)
Several errors in bio:
1. Grandfather, Nathaniel Lewis came from RI (not MA) sometime between 1802 and 1805. He was a 7th Day Baptist minister before turning to farming. He died 03 Jul 1857 (not 1859). He was the father of 9, rather than 8 children. Youngest child, daughter Ruhamah, preceded both parents in death.

2. Father, Henry W. was b. in Butternuts (06 Apr 1815) and d. in Morris (not the reverse), as Morris was not yet formed at the time of his birth.

NORWICH BOTTLING WORKS

Charlotte Tue Jun 20 20:09:52 2006
I have an old quart bottle with "Norwich Bottling Works, Norwich, NY" in raised lettering on the front. It has a bail cap. I was told that the company bottled Coca Cola. The bottle is half full of a thick syrup, probably condensed Coke syrup after all these years. I am trying to find out when the company was in business in order to date the bottle.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks, Charlotte Brooks

Seeking information regarding James VanNESS (circa 1868- 1930's)who lived in Harpursville and later in life near White Store. We think he may be buried in White Store Cemetery in a pauper's grave. Have looked through this cemetery's records but his name is not found. His son Clarence worked on a farm just before the cemetery in White Store. I find him in the 1930 census in Harpursville as a hired man.

POTTER - OWEN - VanOSTRAND

Carol Berry Redd Sun Jul 23 15:56:53 2006
My g.g.grandfather was Charles Wilson POTTER. I have located an excellent family connection and gained much information, but I would like to put together a pictoral family history - with the help of what all who are a part of this one HUGE family.

Charles Wilson's father, Thomas POTTER, descends from William POTTER b. 1608, and entered America as one of America's First Families:
In Feburary 2002, Ernie Hatton stated that: The genealogist for "First Families of America" has approved the descendancy from John POTTER, a founder of New Haven, CT., to myself and my daughter Dawn Hatton. First Families are families that arrived prior to 1662. Ours arrived in 1635 with John's mother Hannah and his brother William. John arrived in 1638. Both were grown men at the time of arrival.

Charles Wilson POTTER who raised his family in Morgan Co, TN was the youngest son of this Thomas POTTER who descends from Nathaniel POTTER

My earliest finding for Charles Wilson POTTER is the 1840 Greene, Chenango Co, NY census living with his wife, Polly OWEN and his parents, Thomas and Lucy POTTER. Also living in the household is George SQUIRES (19) and Eupheme Van OSTRAND (16). I am very interested to learn Eupheme VanOSTRAND is. Her name indicates some family connection because Charles Wilson named 3 of his daughters similarly; i.e., Eudolpha, Eudemia, and Eugenia. Please help me locate this connection!!

Charles Wilson POTTER brought his family to Tennessee in 1866. Charles Wilson and Mary Pauline "Polly" (OWEN) POTTER moved to Knoxville, TN in 1866 from Chenango Co, NY. Polly's gravestone says she was born in Albany Co, NY in 1825. Please help me locate Polly's parents and siblings. Polly died 13 Oct, 1873, her 48th birthday and is buried at Concord Masonic Cemetery along with her daughter, Sibyl Eugenia POTTER ANDERSON at CONCORD MASONIC CEMETERY as evidenced below (obtained from the Knox Co genealogy website) Compiled and contributed by David Donahue

This cemetery is a block east of Concord Road and one block north of the railroad tracks. The cemetery is well maintained. If there were unmarked graves in all the open gaps in the older parts of the cemetery, there might be almost 100 unmarked graves. However, someone who compared the markers and the cemetery plot records in 1994 says that there are only two unmarked graves. There are definitely more than that, probably around a dozen unmarked graves. The cemetery was recorded April 16, 1989. It was checked January 1, 1990 and February 4, 1990. Updated January 20, 1997.

(This should read "Polly") POTTER, Dolly Owen, 10/13/1825-10/13/1873, "Wife of C. W. POTTER" "Was born in Albany Co. N.Y. . . . Died in Knox Co. Tenn." "Aged 48 years" "Our mother at rest"
(Polly's daughter) POTTER, Eugenia Sibyl [see Anderson, Eugenia Sibyl POTTER]

Her obituary of her death on 6/2/1930, says she is survived by 2 brothers, Daniel Potter of Knoxville, TN (this must be Daniel Rocier POTTER b. 1855) and Rannie Potter ( b. 1860 or 1865) of Wartburg, 2 half-sisters, Mrs. Ola Redman and Miss Annie Potter; three half-brothers, Munson, Wilson, and Elmer.

Lucy Matilda JONES, the daughter of his older sister, Emily, married Joseph Gordon KNOX, 4 Oct 1870 in Concord, TN - now known as Farragut, TN. She had several children while in TN:
May Elizabeth, b. 16 Sep 1871 in Knoxville
George Gordon Knox, b. 3 Jul 1873 in TN
Edgar Jones, b. 2 May 1875 in TN
Almira Emily Knox, v. 26 June 1877 in TN
Then, the family must have moved to Kansas where Caroline Adelia, Mary Ellen, Jessie Anna, Lucy Augusta, and Edith Eugenia were born.

Please post or email me at PotterOwen@aol.com any info you might have on any of these.

SAGE

William Morrison Sun Sep 3 06:18:28 2006
On 14 Ded 1823 Lucy E (RATHBONE) SAGE died and was buried in Amblerville Cemetery, New Berlin, Chenango, NY. The surname of RATHBONE is just one of many spelling that have been found, however, I have used the one both most commonly found and most common in usage. She was married to Nathan SAGE abt 1817.

Nathan married (2), what I believe is Lucy C CLARK.
I am lacking many details on this family and would appreciate anyone helping me in filling in the gaps. I would like to know:

When and where was Nathan born?
When and where was Lucy RATHBONE born?
When and where did Nathan and Lucy RATHBONE marry?
When and where was Lucy CLARK born?
When and where did Nathan and Lucy CLARK marry?

I have found two children by Nathan and Lucy RATHBONE (Ezra C & Ester Lucy).
I have found two children by Nathan and Lucy CLARK (Calista A & Helen S).

I do have some dates and places that have been passed to me by others, however, when I seek verification I come up completely empty. Therefore, I do not prefer to broadcast those submissions in fear that they will be perpetuated.

I have traced the Nathan SAGE family from this county to counties in Wisconsin (WI) and Minnesota (MN). Nathan died in Steele County, MN on 23 Feb 1884 at the age of 84. He is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery, Owatonna, Steele, MN. Lucy C (CLARK) SAGE died in Steele County, MN on 19 Jul 1886 at the age of 85. She is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery, Owatonna, Steele, MN. These data are verified.

Nathan and family appears to have moved from Omro, Winnebago, WI to Meriden, Steele, MN sometime in 1875 - still trying to tighten that date up a bit.
Again, any clues will be greatly appreciated.
William Morrison

ROBBINS - ATKYNS

Craig Poole Wed Sep 6 08:54:46 2006
Looking for info on a Henry T. ROBBINS, who was born in 1833 in NY, and married first to a Hannah M, 1835-2/11/1867, buried at Frink cemetery, and 2nd to a Pluma-Plumie ATKYNS, and third to Prudha?

Henry T. by first marriage, had 4 children that I know of. Mary S, Sophrano, Charlotte E and Wheeler H. Wheeler H ended up in Dunlap, Harrison Cnty, Ia, and married Ella CHRISTIE, and had 2 sons, True and Rolla Rex. True b/d8/11/1886-9/21/1886, and Rolla 1/8/1888-10/18/1943. Rolla married Ada May NELSON and had 6 children.

Henry T was married 2nd to Plumie-Pluma ATKYNS, and she died June 18, 1890, and is buried with Henry at Frink Cemetery.
In 1910, Henry shows married to Prudy, born 1850, and had been married 16 years, and she had 2 children, with 1 living. No idea on maiden name or children's names. In 1930, Prudy is widowed and still living in Pharsalia.

Any help on this family apprecaitted. I know there are a couple of other Henry's also, so have tried to give as much info that I have so far. I show this Henry, 78 on the 1910 census, and then cannot find him after that.

Appreciate any help. Thank you. Craig, Omaha, Nebraska

EDVARDSSON / ANDERSFON / ANDERSSON / EDWARDS / ADWARDS

Alice Lyons Mon Oct 23 12:34:56 2006
My husbands grandfather arrived in the United States on November 19, 1904. On the ship Compania leaving from London. He was Karl EDVARDSSON age 19 from Sweden. Over the years his name went from Karl EDVARDSSON to Carl ANDERSFON, ANDERSSON, EDWARDS & finally to Carl ADWARDS.

His destination was South New Berlin, NY, to stay with cousin John CARLSSON.

With him & the spellings may be wrong because they are off a ship manifest, but all were from the same town in Sweden and going to South New Berlin.

Hilda Nilsson 23 to stay with friend Imma ANDERSSON
Idn ETEANOROF 18 "
Betty ETEANOROF 20 "

Lund BLANDA 18 to stay with friend Tilda KARLSSON
Karl ANTON 24 "

Manfred BENGTSSON 18 to stay with cousin Tilda CARLSSON

Gerda ANDERSSON 17 to stay with friend John KARLSSON

Alma KARLSSON 22 to stay with brother John KARLSSON

Amanda BENGTSSON 20 to stay with sister Selma KILGAN

Because of the similarities, some of these people must have been brothers, sisters, cousins & were going to the same homes.

Karl EDVARDSSON / Carl ADWARDS eventually lived in Norwich & was a sheriff. He married Gertrude WHITE & they had 3 children, Edwin, Evelyn and Anna ADWARDS.

If anyone knows of these people I would like to know.
Alice

WHEELER

Richard Wheeler Mon Nov 6 16:12:27 2006
I am seeking information on Daniel WHEELER, an early settler in Lebanon, Chenango County, NY from 1797 until his untimely death December 25, 1806 (age 35) in Lebanon. His wife's name was Amanda WHEELER, who after his death, in a second marriage, became Amanda LAPHAM. She died in Eaton on April 22, 1869 at age 92. Daniel had a brother in Lebanon with him at the time named Elisha WHEELER. Elisha WHEELER lived in the area until his death on December 21, 1836, age 68. Daniel and Amanda WHEELER had five children. I would like to find out their names. Additionally, I’d like to find out where Daniel and his wife came from, before arriving in Chenango County in 1797. It is reported he came from Chatham, Columbia County, NY. It is possible he was actually born in Connecticut and as a child removed to Chatham, Columbia County with his family. Then, as young adults, they (Daniel and Elisha) again removed to Lebanon, Chenango County, NY. Should you have any information on this matter I would appreciate hearing from you. I have data on WHEELER descendents from Lebanon, Otselic and on to Syracuse I can share.
Best regards, Richard Wheeler

RANDALL - HYDE - COOPER - PALMER - ADAMS - PIERCE

Andrea D. V. Hyde (Rogers) Sat Jan 6 22:33:26 2007
They were all my father, Mark De Elton HYDE's ancestors, and I want to know more about them, especially more about Sarah Irene RANDALL (wife #1 of Charles Philetus HYDE)--- they were from the Pitcher, NY area...also, Asa ADAMS and his wife, Elizabeth (b: NY, moved to Illinois) who's daughter, Sarah (b:Illinois in 1849) was married to Chauncey De Elton HYDE of Pitcher, NY== who was in the 76th Reg. His brother Charles Addison HYDE is buried at Gettysburg, where he died on July 4th 1863 of his wounds he recieved on July 1, 1863.

Samuel PIERCE and Charles HYDE (grandfather of the one at Gettysburg and father of Charles Philetus HYDE---Yes, there were a lot of Charles HYDEs in a row!!) were deacons along with Joanna Pierce HYDE (Samuel's daughter and Charles's wife) at the Pitcher Congregational Church during the war of 1812 and they moved to Pitcher from Connecticut. (Joanna Pierce HYDE was a direct descendant of Gov. Wm. BRADFORD of the Mayflower Colony). I want to find out how to get copies of their sermons or something that can tell me that they were Patriots for the War of 1812, so I can join the Daughters of 1812---right now I am a prospective member and we go around NY State and mark the graves of proven 1812 Patriots. I am already a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a prospective member of the Mayflower Association for CT., where most of my ancestors came to NY from and a lot of them were founders of CT.

Sarah ADAMS' father, Asa and her mother Elizabeth are of particular interest to me, and I'm wondering what Elizabeth's maiden name was...also the given name of Asa's father...and why did they move to Winnebago County, Ill. from NY in the mid 1800's?

Andrew Jackson COOPER of Tioga County is another person of interest to me and also his wife, Sarah PALMER (Yes, ther were a lot of Sarah's in my father's family!!) I would like to know who their parents were...Sarah and A.J. COOPER were my grandmother, Maude L. COOPER's parents and my father's maternal grandparents....

My father was Mark De Elton HYDE, b:8/05/1915 in Cortland, NY, and his wife's name (my mother's name) is Melba...she was born in St. Louis, MO.

I put some of this information on here in case it helps someone else out in the Central NY area, and also in case someone knows more about the above ancestors of my father, who died in an auto accident on May 1, 1969---I still miss him to this day. He attended Cortland State Teacher's College in the 1930's---he was a history major, and was the son of farmers in McLean, NY. He removed us to Syracuse, NY in 1944, where he worked downtown in sales after being honorably discharged from the Army Air Corps. He and my mother moved back to James St in the late 1950's and also had an " 'A & W' Root Beer" stand on Route 281 in Prebble, NY for a long time, and he bought his western style clothes, etc. at "Buck and Bum's"...

Thanks for your time...and possible interest....Happy 2007.

WOOLDRIDGE - ELWELL

William Brackett Wed Jan 24 13:09:53 2007
John and Patience WOOLDRIDGE lived in Smyrna as early as 1830. In 1850 they have one son William WOOLDRIDGE. In 1860 Willam is living with Patience but John must have died. There is a J. W. WOOLDRIDGE buried in the East Smyrna Cemtery who died in 1858. William WOOLDRIDGE married Jane Jennette ELWELL about 1865 and they are found in the 1870 census of Plymouth. I would like to know if there are marriage records or death records from this time period. It appears John and Patience WOOLDRIDGE were from Vermont. I would like to find someone who knows of this family group. William and Jennette moved on to Michigna by 1874 and then to Nebraska by 1880. I believe William WOOLDRIDGE died in Nebraska about 1880-85 when Jennette returned to Michigan with their children.

CLEVELAND - LYON

Bob Brewer Sun Jan 28 10:20:34 2007
CLEVELAND's:
Leroy Amaziah, b 1828 Bainbridge
John Wesley, m 1826 Bainbridge
William [Jr], d 1854 Bainbridge

This is my direct line, and my mo, a CLEVELAND, massaged it pretty well decades ago; however, the ? of who Wm [Sr]'s fa is has existed for over 100 years. Everything on the Inet accepts the conjecture of the 1899 CLEVELAND genealogy book. My mo questioned that conjecture 50 years ago, and after studying it I question it even more. I've written up my thinking, or lack of it, and would like other opinions. In relation to that I have ?s:
1. Does anyone have the will of Wm [Sr]'s poss fa, Curtice, b 1701 Plainfield / Canterbury CT, d 1758 prob Norwich CT?
2. Does anyone have anything on his poss fa, Josiah, b 1706-9 prob N Kingston, RI, d prob aft 1752 prob Kennilworth / Killingsworth CT?

LYON's:
Sally, b 1804 Bainbridge
Samuel, d 1855 Bainbridge

Again, this is my direct line; John Wesley, above, m Sally 1826 Bainbridge. Of course, I'm always willing to learn more, but I mainly need a photo:
Samuel LYON & wif Charlotte BRIGGS, 1860 Bainbridge, are buried in W Bainbridge Cemetery, so, would anyone be willing to get me a photo of that gravesite?
Apparently that cemetery hasn't been transcribed yet, and of course it's possible the marker(s) are missing or can't be read.
Thanks, Bob Brewer

AUSTIN - HARRIS

Kem Hart-Baker Sat Sep 15 12:07:29 2007
Looking for specific death date and location for my GG grandmother, Alice Irene (HARRIS) AUSTIN from Chenango County, NY. She was born in Lewis county, NY and was married to Henry S. AUSTIN of McDonough, Chenango County, NY

Verbal family history has her working as a housekeeper for the FAIRCHILD family in either Oxford or Greene during the late 1920's or early 1930 (possibly either 1928 or 1929). She supposedly died while working in their home.

I'd like to find someone in the area who would be willing to look through the old newspapers for the area during that time period to locate a copy of her obit or perhaps research the local historian documents. I'd be willing to pay reasonable costs associated with this request or will "trade" for research in the Tioga County, area of NY.

Thanking you in advance for any assistance offered.

Flows From Bleecker Mountain
The source of the Cayadutta is in the town of Johnstown, part way up the side of the Bleecker mountain, on the west side of the highway just above the barn on the Edward Smullen farm. From there it dashes and splashes over rocks down the mountain side along the highway and through Bull Rum. It keeps within sight of the Bleecker road and first appears in Gloversville as it crosses West Eleventh avenue, near the city line. Passing through Gloversville and Johnstown, it leaves Fulton county at Sammonsville and pours into the Mohawk river in the western part of Fonda. The Cayadutta was never deep or big enough to be used by the Indians for transportation but Indian paths ran along its banks and it was highly valuable to them for fishing. On its bank was situated one of the two Indian villages which are known to have existed in Fulton county. This village site was discovered in 1892 and Indian archeologists have determined that it was occupied by Iroquois a little before 1600. It was located on the east bank of the Cayadutta a mile or thereabouts upstream from Sammonsville.

Please anyone with information on this family please email @ MyRootz2@aol.com
