Taylor, Emma Jean (Sterner). b. Oct. 22, 1858. d. July 14, 1943 Town of Ellery. Age 84/2/20. d/o M. W. & Eliza (Locke) Sterner. w/o Eugene E. Taylor. PJ: 1/15/1943: Dewittville: Mrs. Emma Taylor, 84, widow of Eugene E. Taylor, died Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the home of her son, Sidney Taylor, here. She also leaves two other sons, Eugene E. Taylor Jr, of Sauk Center, Minn., and Glenn L. Taylor of Belgrade, Minn.; two daughters, Mrs. Earl W. Anderson of Clark, S.D., and Mrs. Roy Fegenbush of Whitney, Iowa; a sister, Mrs. Hattie Smith of Onana, Iowa; 21 grandchildren. Her husband died nine years ago and their youngest son, Francis Taylor, in 1933. Mrs. Taylor was born at Pecatonica, Ill., Oct 22, 1858, the oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. M. V. Sterner and shortly after her marriage journeyed with her husband by covered wagon to Kansas, taking a homestead. The family lived there until 1920 when it came east and she had since lived in this county. The remains are at the Harrison Funeral Home, Sinclairville and funeral services will be held there Sunday at 2 p.m. with interment in Red Bird Cemetery.

Taylor, Sidney S. b. Nov. 6, 1898 Onawa, Iowa. d. Jan. 15, 1977 Gerry Heritage Village Health Care Center. Age 78. bd. beside his parents. There is a big pine tree on this lot which was planted by Sidney. s/o Eugene E. & Emma Jean (Sterner) Taylor. unmarried. Sidney was an artist and a taxidermist. He lived several years on the Morgan Sack Farm on Hale Road, where he was a handyman. He was caretaker for the Brambridge Colby estate the last the he worked before going to Heritage Village. He has a nephew Glenn, who took care of funeral arrangements. Sidney’s tomb stone is inscribed "Uncle Sidney Taylor".

Merlin Wagner Briggs also bd. in Red Bird Cemetery. PJ: 7/?/1975: Mrs. Carrie T. Briggs, 89, of 210 N. Portage St., Westfield, died Thursday (July 3, 1975) in Doctors Hospital, Erie, Pa., after a short illness. She was the widow of Merl W. Briggs, who died Feb. 24 of this year. Mr. and Mrs. Briggs were married Nov. 26, 1906. She was born Sept. 26, 1885, in Ellery, the daughter of Lewis and Margaret Tefft, and resided in Westfield 35 years. In former years she had worked in the Coffee Shop of the former Hotel Samuels in Jamestown. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. Surviving are a son, Lauros Briggs of Jamestown; a daughter, Mrs. Helen Wetsel of Westfield; four granddaughters, Mrs. Deloros Sampson of Greenhurst, Mrs. Patricia Trujillo of Jamestown, Mrs. Betty Russo of Ohio, and Mrs. Jelnnie Wolcott of Brocton; two grandsons, Larry Briggs of West Ellicott, and Michael Briggs of Jamestown; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Barber Funeral Home. The Rev. Douglas H. Garwood will officiate. Burial will be in Red Bird Cemetery, South Stockton.

PJ Obit 9/2/2001 - Jay F. Thompson, 72, of Bowers Road, died Sunday (Sept. 2, 2001) in his home after a brief illness. He was born June 6, 1929, in Jamestown, a son of the late Jay F. and Jennie Wakefield Thompson. A Chautauqua County resident most of his life, he attended Cassadaga Valley Central School. He was employed as a milk hauler, self-employed as a logger and was a construction worker with Local Union 17. He retired from Benchley Rental in 1991. He had also worked as a CARTS driver. Surviving are five daughters: Teena Swanson, Nancy Snyder, Vickie Mangine, Debbie Buckland, all of Cassadaga, and Margaret Colburn of Geneva, Ill.; nine grandchildren: nine great-grandchildren; two sisters: Gertrude Pickard of Heritage Village in Gerry and Thelma Christiansen of Jamestown. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 27 years, Rita E. Thompson, whom he married July 22, 1967, and who died Jan. 24, 1995; a grandson, Jaret Colburn; and a brother, Wakefield Thompson. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Jordan Funeral Home, Sinclairville. Burial will be in Red Bird Cemetery.

PJ: 1/12/1995: Sinclairville: Carlyle C. "Curly" Tilyou, 80, of 5859 Route 380 and Homossassa, Fla., died Wednesday (Jan. 10, 1996) in Surrey Place, LeCanto, Fla. He was born April 22, 1915 in Gerry, son of Harry and Grace Coe Tilyou. A Chautauqua resident his entire life, he attended Sinclairville High School. He owned and operated a farm in South Stockton for more than 50 years and also produced maple syrup under the label, "Chautauqua Lassies," retiring in 1978. He was a member of many farm organizations, including the New York State Maple Syrup Association. He was a former member of the International Order of Odd Fellows in Sinclairville and the Sinclairville Volunteer Fire Department. He had served a Republican committeeman for more than 30 years. Surviving are his wife of 24 years, Edna A. Carlson Tilyou, whom he married Dec. 11, 1971; a daughter Marilyn Desnerk, a son, Larry Tilyou, both of Sinclairville; two step-daughters, JoAnne Hagberg, Jamestown, and Marian Scott, Sinclairville; two stepsons, Bruce Edwards, Jamestown, and Evan Edwards, Sinclairville; 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Martha Fisher, Seabeck, Wash. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Tilyou. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Jordan Funeral Home, Sinclairville, The Rev. James D. Bailey, pastor of Park United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Red Bird Cemetery.

Tilyou, Eugene A. b. Apr. 4, 1917 Town of Gerry. d. May 3, 1980 was pronounced dead on arrival at Jamestown General Hospital. He had been stricken earlier at his home Route 380, Stockton. Age 63. s/o Harry C. & Grace (Coe) Tilyou. md. Aug. 28, 1940 - Olive Snell. PJ: 5/ /1980: South Stockton: Eugene A. Tilyou, 63, of Route 380, South Stockton, was pronounced dead on arrival at Jamestown General Hospital, Saturday afternoon (May 3, 1980). He was stricken earlier at his home. He was born April 4, 1917 in the Town of Gerry, a son of the late Harry C. and Grace Coe Tilyou. Tilyou had been employed by Cassadaga Valley Central School for 27 years, retiring in March 1977 for health reasons. He was a member of the South Stockton Church of God and had served many years as a trustee of Red Bird Cemetery Association. Surviving are his wife, the former Olive Snell, whom he married Aug. 28, 1940; a daughter, Sharon Lang of Sinclairville; a son, Ross Tilyou of Jamestown; six grandchildren; a sister, Martha Fisher of Scabeck, Wash.; and a brother, Carlyle Tilyou of Centralia. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Jordan Funeral Home, Sinclairville. The Rev. Dewey M. Yale, pastor of South Stockton Church of God, will officiate. Burial will be in Red Bird Cemetery.

PJ: 1/ /1973: Centralia: Harry C. Tilyou, 83, died Monday afternoon (Jan. 27, 1973) at the home of his son, Carlyle C. Tilyou of South Stockton. He was born Feb. 10, 1889, in the Town of Ellery, the son of Jason J. and Rose (Kibbe) Tilyou. Before his retirement, he had been a potato producer and was widely known as the "Potato King" and also as a maple syrup producer. Mr. Tilyou, and his wife, the former Grace Coe, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary 11 years ago, and would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary March 28 of this year. He was a graduate of Jamestown Business College, a member of the South Stockton Church of God, a 50-year member of the Centralia Grange and a member of the Sinclairville Senior Citizens. In his younger days, he was widely known as a fiddle player with various dance groups and orchestras in the area. For the past 18 years, Mr. and Mrs. Tilyou had made their winter home in Florida but ill health prevented their going this year. Surviving besides his wife, are a daughter, Mrs. Martha Fisher, Seabeck, Wash.; two sons, Carlyle C. Tilyou and Eugene A. Tilyou, both of South Stockton, nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Grace Thelander, St. Petersburg, Fla. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Jordan Funeral Home, Sinclairville. The Rev. Russell I. Hinderer, pastor of the Bethany Church of God, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Willis McChesney. Burial will be in Red Bird Cemetery.

Mr. Vibbert is survived by two sons, Cecil Vibbert, Jamestown and Chester Vibbert, Brockway, Pa.; two daughters: Mrs. Lillian Reiner, Warren, O., and Mrs. Ruth Bundy, St. Mary’s, Pa.; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Mabel Starr; two brothers, Sherm Vibbert, Brockway, and Chester Vibbert, Detroit, Mich., and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the Peterson Funeral Home, Frewsburg. Rev. Bertil A. Erling, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church of Frewsburg, will officiate. Burial will be in Red Bird Cemetery, Town of Ellery.
