Resident of Friendship for 30 years, she previously lived in Wellsville. Lot 845 SCHOLES, JOHN WILLIAM John William Scholes , a well known and well liked man, wagon maker, carpenter and storekeeper died Monday morning, Sept. 10, 1923, at the home of his daughter Mrs. W. W. Dort of Belfast. He was born March 1839, in Annalore, Monaghan County, Ireland, and came to American when four years old. In 1865 he married Miss Lydia Manning who preceded him in death in 1922. Died at her home in Angelica, on July 28th, 1890, aged 71 years; came to this country with her husband and two children John W., and Eliza, in 1842. Stopped in Washington County, N.Y. a short time, then moved to Terre Haute, Indiana. Returned to Ireland in 1846, and again to this country in 1859, settling in Birdsall; finally in Angelica. Daughter of Nelson and Melissa Lyon. Married in 1881 to John Scholes. Survived by four sons: Alton of Dalton; Arthur of Silver Springs; Wesley of Angelica; and Roy of Rochester; two daughters, Mrs. Harry Bates of Belfast, Miss Hazel Scholes of Akron, Ohio; four sisters, Mrs. Julia Williams, Mrs. Elizabeth Commons, Mrs. Nettie Wyant, and Mrs Nellie Green. Burial in Angelica. Lot 845 SCHOLES, RICHARD D. Born 1826 in Ireland of John and Eliza Dodson Scholes; died June 10, 1893, as a result of an accident; aged 67. His first wife was Miss Letetia Campbell; a son born to them died and was buried at sea on their passage over; the wife died in New York a week after landing. He came to America and to Birdsall in the year 1851, and remained there except for a period of about 5 years, 30 years or so ago, when he served on the New York police force. Married Miss Caroline Roach of Allen, in 1851; she died in 1858. His three children were born of this marriage. In 1860, married a widow, Mrs. Mary Lippincott Dungan, who had five children at the time; she died in 1870. In 1872 he married as his fourth wife Mrs. Mary Mitchel-Brass, a widow having one son. She now survives him; children, John D. of Angelica, Emma J. (Mrs. Orren Smith), and Miss Elizabeth Scholes who there lives; she is at present very low with consumption and too ill to attend the funeral of her father, whose death is a severe shock to her. There are also four brother and two sisters, as follows: William, of West Almond; John and Andrew, of Birdsall; Robert, of West Virginia; Mrs. Nancy Hamilton, a widow, in Birdsall; and Mrs. Eliza Williamson, Canaseraga. Son, Robert Scholes of Texas. Lot 720 SCHOLES, THOMAS Lot 721 SCHOLES THOMAS A. Thomas A. Scholes was born in Analore, Monaghan Co. Province of Ulster in Ireland, December 12, 1849, of Andrew and Margaret Jane Elliott Scholes. When about three years of age his father came to this country, and located on the farm in Birdsall, part of which is now owned by Alexander Hamilton. About seven years after he came to this country, his family came to the new home. At this time Thomas Scholes was about ten years of age. For several years he lived with his father in the town of Birdsall. After reaching young manhood he went to Belfast and learned the wagon and carriage maker's trade, then came to Angelica, where he conducted his brother's, J.W. Scholes' shop for a few years. Failing health led him to abandon the shop, and go out into the country that he might regain his health. Meanwhile he had married, taking for his wife Miss Caroline D'Autremont, on Nov. 17, 1875. Together with his wife, he moved to the Common's farm on the Common's road, where the stone house now is. This was their home until several years ago when he purchased the farm on the West Almond road, on which he lived until his death which occurred on Sunday morning, May 9, 1909. Survivors: widow, two daughters Cornelia M., now Mrs. David Evans, and the younger one Mabel D., now Mrs. Chas. Morton. The body was laid to rest in the village cemetery, there to rest until the day dawn of eternity shall come. SMITH, Mrs. CLARA HIGGINS Mrs. Clara Alzina Hapgood Higgins Smith, widow of Frank Sullivan Smith, one time head of the Shawmut Railroad and a sister of the late Governor Frank W. Higgins, died at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, March 15, 1934. She was born in Rushford, September 6, 1854, the daughter of Orrin Thrall Higgins. Her brother was Frank Wayland Higgins, Governor of New York from 1904 to 1906. Her philanthropic interests resulted in the donation of the main building of the Olean General Hospital, formerly The Higgins Memorial Hospital, and the Angelica Free Library. She was a frequent visitor at her summer home here, known as the Sunnycroft, in former years when Mr. Smith headed the railroad. A nephew, F. Harrison Higgins of New York is the only immediate survivor. Funeral services were privately conducted in New York and the body brought to this village for burial in the Smith Mausoleum. SMITH, Mrs. ELIZABETH ANN THOMPSON Elizabeth Ann, wife of Hiram Smith, was born in Ovid, Seneca county, Oct. 23, 1816, and moved with her parents, Andrew and Susan Thompson, to Amity, this county, when a little girl. On July 2, 1835, she was united in marriage to Hiram Smith, and immediately after moved on their farm in Angelica. There were born to them two sons and seven daughters-all of who survive. One of the most conspicuous graves in the Angelica cemetery is that of Ira Stephens who was consigned to his last resting place on the 20th day of September, 1803 (83 years ago), at the age of 43 years. Deceased was one of the pioneer settlers of Allegany county, and becoming involved in a dispute with one of his neighbors concerning a dog, the result of which terminated in a combat, Stephens was struck on the head with an elm wood club, the blow of which proved fatal. Lot 105 THORNTON, GEORGE Born in Ireland in 1842, son of Henry and Jane Thornton; died July 9, 1931. At 19 enlisted for the Civil War in August at Angelica, N.Y. Participated in more than 60 engagements; took part in Sheridan's March to the Sea; was personal friend of Ulysses S. Grant; mustered out in June 30, 1865. He was commander of the Meade Post of the G.A.R. for two terms, and at his death was senior Vice Commander for the Department of Washington and Alaska of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. In early life studied engineering in Kansas City and was engaged with western railroads for several years. Was treasurer of Labette County several terms and formed partnership of Ellis and Thornton in the furniture business. Moved to Washington in 1889. For two terms he was Pierce Bounty engineer and commander of the Custer Post of the G. A. R. in Tacoma. Survivors: Marvin, son, Yakima; Mary E. Gretta B. and Hazel Jo, daughters, Yakima; William B. Lot 115 THORNTON, SAMUEL Lot 116 THORNTON, THOMAS Native of Ireland, came to America about 1845. Married Mary Hanlon. Came to Angelica in the 50's. sons are Thomas C. and Samuel. THORNTON, THOMAS C. Born one of eight sons to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Thornton, on December 22, 1858; died in December 1894 in angelica. He received a good education and also became a bookkeeper. In April 1878 he began working in the Hawley & Hooker Hardware Store, with whom he remained as an assistant until September 19, 1882, then becoming partner with Mr. Hooker. Later, Mr. Hooker left the business in care of Mr. Thornton. Mr. Thornton became one of the most popular citizens in the town. He was active as a member of the St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He was married to Miss Ida May Post on June 22, 1886. Four children were born to this union: Regina Sue, Mary Lucille, William Andrus and Dorothy May. He was stricken by inflammatory rheumatism from which he had previously suffered, and finally the disease went to the brain, and went into a coma until the end came. Lot 327 THORNTON, Mrs THOMAS C. Came to Angelica about 1882; Husband died in 1917. Parents, Frederick William and Elizabeth Martin, came from Kent, England in 1839 and settled in Rochester. Mrs. Tucker was a member of the Woman's Relief Corp. Mother of four children, three of whom survive: one son Frederick William Tucker died in 1921. Survivors: daughter, Mrs. O. A.
