PICTOU COUNTY GENEALOGY & HERITAGE SOCIETY

ADMINISTRATORS OF THE MCCULLOCH HOUSE MUSEUM AND HECTOR EXHIBIT CENTRE

Fall/Winter 2007 Newsletter

Dear Member:

In August, our Curator, Darrell Burke accepted a new position with Balmoral Grist Mill Museum .  During his tenure McCulloch House was refurbished and reopened.  Summer 2007 was the first full season for the “new and improved” McCulloch House and the public responded by attending in large numbers.  Darrell’s new beginning is also a new beginning for us and we are currently searching for a Curator.  Until the position is filled Allison Hartson is our Acting Curator.

Our fundraising campaign “Save a Moment” met and exceeded its goal of $15,000.  Thanks to all of you who supported this wonderful undertaking.  Part of the campaign included the presentation of the first ever “Heritage Hero” awards at a gala evening held in the spring.  Don MacIsaac and Doris MacMillan were our inaugural heritage award recipients.  The funds raised allowed us to pay off a loan with the Bank of Nova Scotia and eliminate an ongoing deficit.  We are able to go into our 2007/08 year with a clean financial slate.

This fall, members of the Pictou Garden Club descended upon the grounds of the McCulloch House and Hector Centre and spent a total of 45 hours cleaning and beautifying our flower beds.  In addition, 70+ bulbs have been planted.   It will be a colourful spring.

At our Annual General Meeting, the following new board was established:

Murray Hill, Past President, Hugh Miller, President, Eric LeBlanc, Vice President, Paula Beer-Eligh, Secretary/Treasurer.  Members: Doris MacMillan, Janet McKay, Bill MacDonald, Patsy Rae, Sharon Young, Ralph Hemmings and Andrew Lindsay, Raymond Gregory, representing the Town of Pictou

Upcoming Programs

On Monday, November’19th, Teresa MacIsaac, Retired St. F.X. professor will be reading excerpts from her recently published book “A Better Life: A Portrait of Highland Women in Nova Scotia”.                  In addition to readings, she will be discussing what inspired her to write the book and will have some copies available for sale.  There will be a short meeting at 7.00, followed by Miss MacIsaac at 7.30 p.m.

Our Christmas party is scheduled for the evening of December 17.  Come and enjoy a taste of an old fashioned yuletide.   Doris Young will do a reading of “Pictou in the 30’s”.  In addition, there will be good food and good music.  We are pleased the Keltic Chords have agreed to entertain us with music and a singalong.    Doors open at 7.00.p.m.

For Winter/Spring 2008, we are working on confirming both Dr. Alan Marble and Terry Punch as guest speakers.  Please keep an eye out for public service announcements concerning these dates.  If you would prefer to receive a notice via e-mail, please send your address to pcghs@gov.ns.ca.

Membership Renewal

Annual dues are payable at the beginning of the calendar year.   We offer an individual membership for $10.00 and a family membership for $15.00.  Members of the Society are entitled to free admittance to the archives, to any exhibits and a reduced photocopy rate.  Fees can be payable by cheque to the Pictou County Genealogy and Heritage Society.  A table will be set up at the November and December meetings to collect your dues, if you prefer to pay in that manner.

Thank you for your continuing support.
