STEELE - REID - SMOTHERGILL

When Elizabeth STEELE (born SMOTHERGILL in 1851) died in about 1919 her estate was distributed by the Central Trust Co. of Camden, NJ. An officer of the Trust Co. in charge of the distribution wrote a letter that year inquiring whether Mrs. Steele had legally adopted one Marjorie REID (born about 1906). Although Mrs. Steele was not the mother of Marjorie Reid, she had raised her. The letter suggests that when Mrs. Steele died Marjorie was placed in a Gloucester County orphanage. It specifically says that the Gloucester County Orphan's Court needed to be satisfied that Mrs. Steele had not adopted Marjorie.
I don't know where to begin in tracking this down. No idea what Elizabeth Steele and Marjorie Reid were doing in Gloucester County. They had been in Connecticut, where the family was from, earlier. What records might I look for?  Are there records for Gloucester County Orphan's Court? In which Gloucester County orphanage might Marjorie have been placed? Are there records of the orphanage? Where might information be found about final disposition of the estate?

GATELY

Searching for my family who came from Gloucester,N.J.  My great grandfather, Joseph Michael GATELY and great grandmother: Mary A.. WALSH, came from England and lived in Gloucester.  They had three children : Edward Peter born June 20,1886, William born 1887 and Marie Elizabeth (May) born June 20,1892.There was a Sheila Gately who returned to England, but I do not know who her parents were.  From the SS lists of Wm. and Marie Elizabeth it shows that they were born in Gloucester, N.J.  My grandfather Edward drown while being a passanger aboard a ship returning to Gloucester, but this is all the information I have been able to find on him.  There is a possibility that my ggmother placed the children in homes because she had very little means to properly support them.  I am trying very hard to find my family, while I never knew them in this life, I owe my children the knowledge of their ancesters and to preserve their lives so they can one day, pass this history down to their children.  If anyone has any knowledge of this Gately line please contact me.  Thank you in advance
