The territorial legislature created Mercer in 1874-75. It was named for an early rancher, William Henry Harrison Mercer (1884-1901), who settled north of Bismarck in 1869.
Government organized: August 4, 1884.
County Seat: Stanton, 1884-present.
Area 1041 square miles.
2000 population -- 10,000.
