Welcome to Transylvania County!

Transylvania (which means "across the woods") is known as the "Land of the Waterfalls" because of the 250 waterfalls in the county. Rivers and streams, mountains and woods all played a part in the settlement and development of the county.

Photo on this page is of Whitewater Falls and was taken by Matt Creech in April 2005. To view more of Matt's excellent photography, click here. Matt is the grandson of the former Helen Owen and Clarence Summey, who lived all their lives in Transylvania County. Helen worked for many years at Austin's Studio on East Main Street, and it's easy to see that her artistic talent has been passed down to her grandson.
