Welcome!

We are currently in the process of rebuilding the Martin County NCGenWeb site.  We need your help!  I will be adding pages that include a surname registry, the ability to add your own obituaries, and cemetery listings.  But I need your help!

Martin County, which is located in the northeastern part of North Carolina, is bounded on the north by the Roanoke River and Bertie County; on the west by Edgecombe and Halifax counties; on the south by Pitt and Beaufort counties; and on the east by Washington County.

Martin County, named in honor of the last Royal Governor of North Carolina, Josiah Martin, was formed in 1774 from parts of Halifax and Tyrrell counties. Native Americans of the Tuscarora tribe originally lived in the region before English immigrants settled it. The site of the first county seat is unknown, but in 1779 Williamston, first called Squhawky and located on the Roanoke River, was established as the county seat and remains so to this day.

The Martin County NCGenWeb is currently up for adoption, if you are interested in becoming the county coordinator of this page, please contact the state coordinator, Denise Woodside.  For more information on volunteering with NCGenWeb, see the NCGenWeb Volunteer Information Page.
