Carrie Morton Cole
October, 1999
Carrie Morton Cole, 95, a longtime resident of Pickett Rd, and widow of
George Pleasant Cole, died Monday.
A native of Person County, she had lived in Durham most of
her life. Mrs. Cole was president of Cole Sausage Co., Inc, retiring in 1985.
She was the last direct descendant of a Civil War Veteran, being sponsored by
M.W. Norfleet Camp 1249 Sons of Confederate Veterans. She was a member of the
First Baptist Church. Surviving are many nieces and nephews. Funeral services
will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel. Burial
will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Section 4. Officiating will be Dr. Andrew Davis.
The Family will receive visitors at Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home Tuesday night
6-8 p.m.

Ben Weaver, 83, of 1341 Cole Mill Rd died at Watts Hospital at 2:40am today.
He was born and reared in Granville County, son of Raynor Weaver and Sylvester "Vester"
Mae Roberts Weaver, and he attended the Granville County Schools.
A resident of Durham since 1920, he worked at the Erwin Mill for 25 years until
he retired. He was a member of the Mt. Hermon Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Rowena Shives of Norfolk, VA and Mrs.
Shirley Herndon and Mrs. Flora Foreman, both of Durham, five sons, Herman Weaver
of Norfolk, VA, Garland Weaver of Greensboro, Winfred Weaver of Pickens, SC,
Durant Weaver of Wake Forest and Edward Weaver of Durham; two sisters, Mrs.
Leona Carroll of Durham and Mrs. Mary Lucy Nash of Cary; one brother Clyde
Weaver of Norfolk, Va; and 11 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Clements Funeral Chapel at 2PM tomorrow.
Burial will be in McMannens United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The Rev. Robert Winecoff pastor of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church will conduct the
service.
Pallbearers will be Cleo Martin, Leo Martin, Kivett McGhee, Frank Gibson, Lee
Rigsbee and John Foley.

Funeral services for Mrs. Florena Pearl Weaver, 73, wife of Ben Weaver, and
resident of 1341 Cole Mill Road, will be held at 2PM tomorrow at Clements
Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in the McMannen's Chapel Methodist
Church Cemetery.
The Rev Haynes Ribers, pastor of Mount Hermon Baptist Church and Rev James
Lloyd, pastor of Mt Bethel Presbyterian Church, will conduct the services.
Pallbearers will be Joe Scoggins, Kivet C McGhee, Philip L Browning, Leo Martin,
Cleo Martin and Lee Rigsbee.
Floral bearers will be members of the Ladies Bible Class of Mt Hermon Baptist
Church.
Mrs. Weaver died at 8:45PM yesterday at Watts Hospital. She had been in
declining health for the past year.
She was born and reared in Alamance County, the daughter of James H Lashley and
Alice Oakes Lashley.

Mrs. Flora Weaver Foreman, 79, a resident of Durham, died Friday at
Durham Regional Hospital. Mrs. Foreman, born in Garner, was the wife of the late
Frank J. Foreman. Prior to retirement she was employed by GTE. She was a member
of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the Lioness, and the Elks Club Ladies
Auxiliary. Mrs. Foreman was a member of Robbins Road Christian Church.
Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Ellen Foreman Kerley, of Durham; son, Kenneth
B. Foreman, of Durham; grandsons, Kenneth B. Foreman, Jr., Kevin D. Foreman,
Brian C. Kerley and Bruce M. Kerley; granddaughter, Mrs. Lori M. Melton;
brother, Winfred Weaver, of Greensboro; sister, Mrs. Rowena Shives, of Norfolk,
VA; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 AM in Clements Funeral Chapel by
the Rev. Roland W. Jones. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The
family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7 to 9 at Clements Funeral Home
and at other times at the home of her son at 2005 Carolina Ave.

Frank Judson Foreman, 68, of 3356 Denise St, Durham, NC died Monday (Sept 10,
1990) in Durham County General Hospital.
Foreman was a lifelong resident of Durham. Before retiring in 1980, he was
employed by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co for 36 years. He was a lifelong
member of First Christian Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher, an Elder
and past chairman of the board. Foreman was a member of the College of
Life Underwriters, Durham Elk's Lodge 568, the Independent Telephone Pioneers
Association and a 23-year member of the Durham Lions Club. He was an
arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau.
The funeral will be conducted at 3:30PM Wednesday in the Clements Funeral Home
chapel by the Rev. David Cartwright. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park,
Durham, NC.
Foreman is survived by his wife, Mrs. Flora Weaver Foreman; a daughter, Mrs.
Ellen F Kerley of Durham; a son, Ken Foreman of Durham; five grandchildren; and
a great-grandchild.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 PM today at Clements Funeral Home.

Durant Vernon Weaver, 52 of Rt 2, Box 582, Hillsborough Rd died Tuesday in
Durham County General Hospital following an extended illness.
He was an electrician and a life-long resident of Durham County. He was a
member of the Methodist Church.
The funeral will be held at 3PM today in Clements Funeral Chapel by the Rev
Lawrence Knott. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving are one daughter, Karen Chasak of Oklahoma City, OK, one son Gary
Wayne Weaver of Durham, three sisters, Mrs. Shirley Metz of Bakersville, Ca,
Mrs. Rowena Shives of Norfolk, VA and Mrs. Flora Foreman of Durham: three
brothers Garland Weaver and Winifred Weaver both of Greensboro and Ed Weaver of
Durham and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Robert Garrard, Leonard Moore, L G Holleman, Frank Baker,
Marion Dempsey and Claiborne Brady.

Durham Boy Killed in Western Europe Battle
Private James B. Weaver, 20 year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Weaver of Route
2, Durham, was reported to have lost his life November 8 (1948)during military
warfare in Western Europe, according to a War Department telegram received by
his parents.
Weaver is believed to be the first Durham victim of the conflict ragging in the
European theatre of war.
He attended Hillandale and Braggtown Schools here and enlisted in the Army Jan.
26 of this year.
Surviving in addition to his parents are five brothers, Winfred who is in
service in Hawaii, Herman of Norfolk, Garland, of Greensboro, and Ed and Durant
Weaver of Durham. Three sisters also survive. They are Mrs. Frank J
Foreman, Mrs. Rowena Moore and Shirley Weaver, all of Durham."
****there were no battles in Europe at this time, it appears that he was
killed in an invasion of Algeria since that was the only operation going on
during that period. The personnel defending that section of Algeria were
the Vichy French****
