Julius A. Barbee

    Julius A. Barbee, 77, retired rural mail carrier of 1417 Alston Avenue, died at home this morning at 3 o'clock
following a long period of declining health. He had been critically ill for the past few weeks.
    Mr. Barbee was born in Durham County, the son of Thomas  and Rebecca Trice Barbee and was educated in the
schools of Durham County. He was one of the first rural mail carriers to serve in Durham County, serving in that
capacity until he retired at the age of 65.
    He was a member of the Berea Baptist Church and a member of the P. O. S. of A. Survivors are his wife, the former
Miss Mollie Barbee; three daughters, Mrs. W. E. Hodges, Mrs. Frank D. King, Mrs. O. K. Herndon Sr.; and one son A.J.
Barbee , all of Durham; B. H. Barbee of Chatham County and E. P. Barbee of  Durham; one sister, Mrs. T. A. Parrish of Durham; and several grandchildren. The body was removed to the local funeral home pending the completion of funeral arrangements.

Mrs. Mollie Barbee

    Mrs. Mollie Barbee, 87, widow of Julius A. Barbee, of 1417 Alston Avenue, died at her home Sunday morning at 1 o'clock. She had been in declining health for several months. Mrs. Barbee was born March 6, 1861, the daughter of the
late George and Martha Hopson Barbee. She lived most of her life in this community and was married to Barbee March 20, 1890. He died June 26, 1947.
    The deceased was an active member of the Berea Baptist Church for many years. Surviving are the three daughters; Mrs. Edgar Hodges, Mrs. Frank D. King, and Mrs. O. K. Herndon and one son A. J. Barbee, all of Durham; 10 grandchildren
and four great grandchildren; one brother, J. M. Barbee and two sisters, Mrs. T. L. Pendergrass and Mrs. Bettie Edwards.        
    Pallbearers will be grandsons O. K. Herndon, Jr. and Randall Herndon, Oliver Beasley, Wallace Beasley, A. J. Barbee Jr., Virgil Vigue, Ervin Huges, Robert H. Young, Jr., and Emerson Page. Honary pallbearers will be nephews Vance Pendergrass, George Ferrell, Robert Lowe Barbee, M. M. Thompson, Fleming Hilliard, Walter Kerr, Leon Gilbert, Ollie Jones. Dr. Waldo Boone, I. H. Page, Genie Shepherd, Marvin Frankin, Cleveland Cook, J. F. Parrish, Alton Thompson, Forrest Green, Clyde Barbee, Foy J. Shaw, Arch P. Thomas. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Berea Baptist Church.    
    The Rev. Calvin Knight, pastor of the church and the Rev. C. B. Norris of Wake Forest will conduct the services. The body will be carried to the church to lie in state prior to the services. Interment will be in the family plot in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Sudie B. Parrish

    Funeral rites for Mrs. Sudie Barbee Parrish, 78, widow of the late Thomas S. Parrish, and resident of the Fayetteville Road, Berea Baptist Community, will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Berea Baptist Church. the Rev. Calvin H. Knight, pastor of the church and the Rev. C. H. Norris, a former pastor, will conduct the services. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at the residence until removed to the church to lie in state one hour before the service.
    Active pallbearers will be R. L. Atkins, H. H. King, Mack Vickers, W. W. Massey, Gene Shepherd and P. J. Rich. Honoray pallbearers will be Dr. W. W. Boone, C. R. McHaney, J. O. Fletcher, J. F. Parrish, A.W. Carpenter, Gordon W. Ward, Claude Vickers, G. C. Cook, T. L. Pendergrass, O. K. Goodwin, G. N. Jones, and J. Roy King.
    Mrs. Parrish died Saturday morning at 2:50 o'clock at her home. She had been in declining health for the past 10 years. For the last seven years she had been an invalid. Her condition had been regarded as critical for the past week.
    She was born and reared in Chatham County, now Durham County,  the daughter of Thomas Barbee and Rebecca Trice Barbee. She received her education in the Durham County Schools. The greater part of her life she lived in the Berea Community where her husband was engaged in farming. For a number of years she has been a member of Berea Baptist Church. In November, 1892 she was married to Thomas A. Parrish who died April 11, 1948. Surviving this union are four daughters, Mrs. John Fletcher, Mrs. Robert Lee, Mrs. Forrest Green and Mrs. Alton Thompson, all of Durham County. Also surviving are two brothers, Thomas Barbee and Paul Barbee, both of Durham County; three grandchildren and  three great grandchildren.

Thomas A. Parrish

    Funeral services for Thomas A. Parrish, 80, retired farmer of the Fayetteville Road, Berea Baptist Church community were held this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the Berea Baptist Church. The Rev. Stanley C. Harrell, pastor of the Congregational Christian Church and the Rev.. C. H. Norris, a former pastor, now at Wake Forest, conducted the service. Interment was in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers were, Genie Shepherd, R. L. Atkins, Mack Vickers, W. W. Massey. H. H. King and P. J. Rich. Honorary pallbearers were, Dr. W. W. Boone, Pender E. Upchurch, Claude Vickers, C. R. McHaney, G. C. Cooke, J. O. Fletcher, T. L. Pendergrass, Claude Barbee, Pleas Shepherd and Zollie Lewter.
    Serving as floral bearers were: Mesdames Genie Shepherd, R. L. Atkins, Mack Vickers, H. H. King, Zollie Lewter, W. W. Massey, G. C. Cooke, Claude Barbee, Foy Shaw, P. J. Rich, Otho Shepherd and Miss Lula Fletcher.
    Mr. Parrish died at his home Sunday morning at 10:45 o'clock. He became ill last Thursday and little hope was held for his recovery. The deceased was born and reared in Durham County, the son of Alfred M. Parish and Francis Pope Parrish. He received his education in the Durham County schools. For a number of years he had been a member of O'Kelly's Chapel. Mr. Parrish had lived all of his life in the community in which he was born. On Nov. 17, 1892 he was married to Miss Sudie Barbee, who survives, as do four daughters, Mrs. J. L. Fletcher, Mrs. L. G. Vickers, Mrs. F. M. Green, and Mrs. W. A. Thompson, all of Durham County; one brother, G. Mal Parrish, Durham County; three grandchildren, Lewis Fletcher, Mrs. Ruth Fletcher Atkins and Victor Graham Vickers; and two great grandchildren, Carolyn Atkins and Tommie Fletcher.

    W.P. BARBEE DIED EARLY YESTERDAY - Funeral services will be held this afternoon at Berea Church for W.P. Barbee, a well known farmer who resided six miles east of the city on Fayetteville Road. Mr. Barbee died yesterday morning at 2 o'clock, following an illness caused by a stroke of paralysis. The deceased was 46 years of age and is survived by his wife and nine children.  Also four brothers.

MRS. BESSIE BARBEE

    Mrs. Bessie Leigh Barbee, 83, died Friday at 4:45 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sarah Watson, 2610 Ashe St. She had been seriously ill for the past two weeks and in declining health for two years.
    Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Victoria Grant of Martinsville, Va., Mrs. Euva Peterson of Durham and Mrs. Sarah Watson of the home; three sons, W. Millard Barbee of Durham and Ira Barbee and Roy Barbee, both of Atlanta, Ga.; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Ethel Thomas, Mrs. Ivey Selfridge and Mrs. Myrtle Rigsbee, all of Durham; 18 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren. She was born in Durham County, daughter of the late John W. Leigh and Sarah Couch Leigh. She was a resident of Durham all of her life and was a member of Temple Baptist Church. She was married in 1907 to William Page (Bud) Barbee, who died September 10, 1920.
    Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Berea Baptist Church. Rev. Crate Jones, pastor of Angier Avenue Baptist Church, Rev. W.L. Addleton, pastor of Cheek Heights Baptist Church, and Rev. Clarence Williams, pastor of Berea Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Ernest Paul Barbee

    Ernest Paul Barbee, 82, of Rt. 3, Chapel Hill-Nelson Highway, Triangle Township, died Monday at 7:45 p.m. at Watts Hospital. He was born in Durham County, the son of the late William T. Barbee and Rebecca Trice Barbee. He was educated in the schools of Durham County. He was member of the Hope Valley Baptist Church, where he was a deacon.
    He lived in Durham County all his life where he was engaged in farming. He was married to Effie Pearl Couch in December 1908. Surviving are his widow; six daughters, Mrs. Gladys Herndon, Mrs. Clara Rigsbee, Mrs. Edna Atkins, Miss Ruth Barbee all of Durham, Mrs. Anne Tilley of Rt 3, Chapel Hill, and Mrs. Margaret Merritt of Chapel Hill; five sons, Robert O. Barbee and William T. Barbee both of Norfolk, Va., Harold Barbee of Fayetteville, E. P. Barbee, Jr of Carrboro and Herbert Barbee of Rt. 7, Durham; 24 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Howerton-Bryan Funeral Chapel. Buried in Maplewood Cemetery, annex B, Durham, NC.

    Funeral services for Mrs. Pearl Couch Barbee, 80, of Glenn Heights, Chapel Hill, and formerly of Durham County, will be conducted today at 3 p.m. at Howerton-Bryan Funeral Chapel by Rev. Warren E. Kerr, pastor of Hope Valley Baptist Church. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Annex B. Pallbearers will be Bobby, David and Stuart Barbee, Tom, Ronald and Mike Merritt, Ed Wheeler and Leon Holloman. She died Sunday morning at Watts Hospital.
    A native of Durham County, she attended Durham County schools and lived here all of her life. She was a  member of Hope Valley Baptist Church. Dec. 27, 1908, she married Ernest Paul Barbee of Durham County, who died June 10, 1968.
    Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. Gladys Herndon, Mrs. Edna Atkins and Mrs. Clara Rigsbee, all of Durham County,

John Will Couch

    John Will Couch, 87, retired farmer and resident of Page Road, Rt 1, Morrisville, died yesterday in Watts Hospital after four weeks of illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Hall-Wynne Chapel by the Rev. Don Brown and the Rev. Gene Outland. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Annex B. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cedar Fork Baptist Church. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
    He was born in Orange County. He had lived his entire life in the Durham area, where he was engaged in truck farming. He was member of Cedar Fork Baptist Church.
    Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lola Perry Couch; four daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Carpenter of Pittsboro and Mrs. Mabel Keith, Mrs. Bessie Green and Mrs.Mildred White, all of Durham County; a son Jesse Couch of Norfolk, Va; 17  grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren; two brothers, Arnold Couch of Akron, Ohio, and Chesley Trice of Durham County; and a sister, Mrs. Frances Cole of Durham County.

ARNOLD D. COUCH

    ARNOLD D. COUCH, 81 years of 3524 S. Turkeyfoot Rd., Portage Lakes, passed away Nov. 6, 1976 at Barberton Citizens Hospital. He was born in Durham, N. Carolina and lived in the Akron area for 50 years. He was retired from Emmett Machine Company and was a World War I veteran and a member of South Akron Fraternal Order of Eagles.
    He is survived by his wife, Beatrice; daughters, Mrs. Betty Barbee and Mrs. Rose Barbee both of Norfolk, Va. and Mrs. John (Bonnie) Cahill of Hinckley; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Frances Cole; and step-brother, Chesley Trice, both of Durham, N.C. Services were held at Billow Lakes Chapel with Rev. James Simpson officiating. Interment Manchester Cemetery.

    Carrboro, Feb 8.- Mrs. Octavia Brockwell Couch, 79, died this morning in Memorial Hospital here following a critical illness for three days and declining health for several years.
    Surviving are three daughters Mrs. Hubert Hackney, Mrs. Leland Pendergrass and Mrs. Ollie Council, all of Carrboro: three sons Jim and Ottis Couch of Carrboro and Ervin Couch of Burlington: eight grandchildren and one great grandchild:
and one brother Oliver J. Brockwell of Orange County.
    Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Carrboro Methodist Church with the Rev. W. G. Crutchfield in charge, assisted by Rev. Leo Bridgers of Durham. The body will be carried to the church one hour prior to the services and interment will be in the Westwood Cemetery in Carrboro. Pallbearers will be Vesta Brockwell, Jim Taylor, Millard Richardson, Edward Thomas, George Williams, Dewey Williams, Jesse Hackney, Percy Sparrow, M. D. Merritt and Lloyd Senter.

    Mr. Chesley Addison Trice, 90, of 3007 Pickett Road died Friday morning at Hillhaven Chapel Hill Nursing Center. Mr. Trice was born and raised in Durham and was the son of the late Chesley A. Trice Sr. and Loretta Cook Trice.
    He was a retired employee of the American Tobacco Co., where he worked in the traffic department for 43 years. Mr. Trice was a member of Ephesus Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lois Emory Trice; sons Addison Trice of Durham, Ray Trice of Atlanta, Ga., and stepson Lance Bowles of Cary; nine grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.            
    Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Clements Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Steven Teague.
Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Edwin Trice, Raymond Trice Jr., Brian Eggers, Ralph Neal, Tillman Elliott and Greg Evans. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Saturday evening at Clements Funeral Home in Durham and at other times at the home of Addison Trice, 3429 Medford Road, Durham.
