Descendants of John Jenkins
Colonial Governor Of North Carolina: 1672-1850

by Rebecca L. Dozier
2006

Descendants of John Jenkins, Colonial Governor Of North Carolina: 1672-1850 is a new book that contains a compilation of John and his wife Joanna Jenkins' descendants using information from the North Carolina Archives, documentation from county courthouses, plus some preponderance of evidence. The first three generations in Section I were proven by Helen Leary, a Certified Genealogist and Fellow of the ASG who lives in Raleigh, NC, and also by the author's forty plus years of research. The author proved the generations in Section II. The book is divided into two sections.

The first section goes into detail about why the father of John Jenkins (ca. 1600-ca. 1681) was not a David Jenkins of Wales or England as tradition has stated over the years. It also provides the names of John and Joanna Jenkins' children and grandchildren and the documentation proving these children. Section one also covers details involving members of the Jenkins families in Perquimans, Bertie, Chowan Counties, NC and Nansemond County, Virginia., as well as their migration from one county to another and from North Carolina to Virginia and later back to North Carolina.

Section two goes into detail with documentation about the six children of Charles and Elizabeth Winborne Jenkins. This section takes the descendants of these six children into the late 1800s. Each of the generations has been documented carefully. Charles's children spread though out the eastern part of North Carolina and into neighboring states, including Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia.

The author has spent many years researching this Hertford and Northampton County family. She has written numerous books, including Twelve Northampton County, North Carolina Families, Town Leaders, Littleton, NC, 1790-1920, Looking Back on Littleton, NC, Twelve Generations of Doziers, 1673-1986, and The Leach Family of Virginia, Johnston, Chatham and Warren Counties, North Carolina: 1737-1991. Descendants of John Jenkins Colonial Governor Of North Carolina: 1672-1850 is printed by Gateway Press out of Baltimore, Maryland. It is a 72 page semi-softback book and is thoroughly indexed and documented.

The price of $32 includes postage and handling. To order send check to: Rebecca L. Dozier, 3522 Pebble Beach Dr., Augusta, GA 30907; RLDozier@aol.com

Hyde County, North Carolina Court Minutes
Volume VI : 1798-1804
by  Weynette Parks Haun

The Hyde County Historical & Genealogical Society is pleased to announce that Book VI of Weynette Haun's "Hyde County, North Carolina Court Minutes" is now available from the society. This volume includes the minutes from the court sessions of 1798-1804.  The book continues the fine work that Mrs. Haun exhibited in her previous compilations of Hyde court minutes. Prepared from microfilm, sometimes difficult to decipher, the book is well-prepared and is of great benefit to those researching their Hyde County lines. The original records are based in the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh and thus not easily accessible to many researchers.  Mrs. Haun has carefully transcribed the records, added a full-name index, a female given-name index, and a place name and miscellaneous index to allow readers to easily locate information. Mrs. Haun has completed work on over one hundred books on North Carolina and Virginia records. She is highly regarded for the quality and accuracy of her transcriptions. The county court minutes contain information regarding deeds, guardian appointment and accounts, bills of sale, division of land, ear marks, bonds, jury lists, accounts of sales, appointment of commissioners to divide land, lists of taxes, articles of agreement, road records, and apprentice records as well as court cases between the State and individuals and cases between individuals themselves.  A researcher never knows just what to expect when using the records as they are not indexed. It is often necessary to spend hours and hours searching for specific information. Mrs. Haun' s work and indexing facilitate a shortcut to that process.  Book VI of the Hyde County Court Minutes is available from the book vendor for the society: R. S. Spencer, Inc., 34910 US 264, P.O. Box 159, Engelhard, NC 27824. The price is $30 plus 7% tax for NC residents and $4 for shipping. The entire collection of the society's many publications are on display and available for purchase at the Spencer True Value store in Engelhard. A publications brochure is available upon request from the vendor by email at RSSpencerInc@aol.com or by visiting the society’s publication web site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/HCHGSPUB.HTM

Also included are wills from Hyde County Will Book 1-2-3 which is found at the courthouse in Swan Quarter, NC as well as Hyde County wills entered for probate in other counties in NC. THE ESTATES OF HYDE - 1700'S
Abstracts of Loose Estate Records of Hyde County
found in the North Carolina State Archives
by Romulus Sanderson Spencer, Jr.
Indexed by Sandra Carawan

The author states in his preface to this book that estate records are generally those of deceased persons who left no surviving will although there are numerous cases of Hyde citizens who had both a will and estate record. Estate records are filled with bonds, allotments, divisions, dowers, inventories, accounts of sales, guardian information, identification of heirs, petitions, copies of deeds and surveys, litigation, summons and various other types of legal records.  While this book would have been huge had it included every item listed in these 600 folders of loose records, it will be an excellent guide to these 1700's estates housed at the North Carolina State Archives. This book includes several photostatic copies of just what some of these estate records really looked like. After viewing them you will be fully aware of the difficulty and time-consuming job it took to extract the information that is now readily available to us with just a flip of a page.  John H. Oden, III writes in the forward , "Researchers will be quite pleased with these abstracts. Rarely does one get a complete listing of exactly what documents may be found within the estate folders located at the North Carolina Division of Archives and History in Raleigh. It is even more of a rarity to have such abstracts prepared by an individual who has devoted more than thirty years of research to one particular county. Through his [R.S. Spencer, Jr.] devotion to Hyde County, he has produced an expertise that is unexcelled in this domain, and his work reflects all of the finer aspect of this expertise."  Available in soft cover, perfect binding, 96 pages, fully indexed for $20.00 per copy (plus 6% tax and $4.00 postage and handling).

HYDE COUNTY, N.C. RECORD OF DEEDS B, 1762-1783
Abstracted and indexed by Allen Wilkinson Hart Norris
Edited by Betty S. Mann and Ellen A. Williams

The Hyde County Historical & Genealogical Society is proud to present its second book of Hyde County deeds. You may be surprised to find many items in this publication which were not copied into the bound volume found at the courthouse in Swan Quarter. There are births, burials, and marriages of citizens of Hyde County as well as fragmented deeds which Ms. Mann carefully copied and indexed. Betty S. Mann and Ellen A. Williams serve as the Publishing Committee of the Hyde society and are responsible for the editing of manuscripts offered to the society for publication. These two ladies had an extraordinarily troublesome time with this manuscript, the most recent one being Hurricanes Dennis, "Dennis Revisited" and Floyd which all caused blackouts in Hyde County not to mention flooded homes and roads. They have persevered and offer this newest work as a research tool.  Available in soft cover, perfect binding, 155 pages, fully indexed for $20.00 per copy (plus $3.00 postage and handling).

HIDDEN ANCESTORS:
Abstracts of Bastardy Papers and Selected Court Minutes Hyde Co., NC  1740-1896
Abstracted by Crestena Jennings Oakley
Edited and Indexed by Ellen A. Williams

As noted by a local, well-known genealogist, this publication is not for everyone -- just those who are really serious about researching their families. If you have looked everywhere for your ancestors and come up empty-handed, you might find them in this publication either as the mother or alleged father of an illegitimate child. The papers found in Hyde’s Bastardy Papers file at the Division of Archives and History, have been placed in alphabetical order by the name of the mother or the alleged father if the mother’s name is not given. (Review by Ellen A. Williams - May 1999)  Available in soft cover, perfect binding, 153 pages, fully indexed for $15.00 per copy (plus $3.00 postage and handling).
