YOUR HOST and PARISH COORDINATOR
My name is Marilyn Strout and
I am also the Charlotte County Coordinator. My mother was raised
on Deer Island, in Richardson, by her maternal Aunt Hettie
"Mae" Johnson who married William Lord. They
lived next door and up the hill from Butler's Store. I
remember spending Sundays at their house, and going down to the
store to buy penny candy, or "picking" the beach for
scallop shells or sea glass. It was and still is always a
great ferry ride from L'Etete over to Butler's Point, but I
remember looking forward to taking the ferry from Eastport in the
summer months and going by "Old Sow", the whirlpool off
Deer Island Point. My great-grandfather Captain Frank
Johnson used to pilot the Viking up the river to
Calais, and one time he got caught in Old Sow. The
passenger knelt on the deck and prayed, and it must have worked
because they finally got out of the whirlpool's hold and
continued on their journey.
Please do not hesitate to
drop me a note, if you'd like to ask a
question. If you have a CD or a Book that you are
willing to do lookup in, please let me know. I want these
pages to be YOUR pages too and I'm hoping you will give me all
kinds of help! If you see a broken link, know of a link I can
add, or would like to ask a question or make any other comments.
