DANIEL HILL was the first permanent white settler in Calais, Maine. Daniel's daughter Elizabeth married James MAXWELL, a founding father of St. Stephen and many of Daniel's descendants remain in the Charlotte County area today! Below you will find a list of his children and their spouses.
First Generation ----------------------------------------
1. Daniel HILL Sr. Born in 1737 in probably Kittery, Eliot or Portsmouth,
New Hampshire. Daniel died in St. Stephen, Charlotte County, New Brunswick
aft Feb 12, 1822, he was 85. Daniel & family lived at ? Union &
High Street, Calais, Maine-Ferry Point. Daniel was a yeoman.
He fought in the French & Indian War under Robert Rogers of Roger's
Rangers. During the Revolutionary War, he defended Machias
against the British Invasion. According to Howard Wolliscraft,
Daniel became a U.S. citizen on 1 JAN 1784 by order of the courts
of Massachusetts. Daniel was one of 16 settlers who came from Scarboro,
Maine to Machias, and then to Ferry Point in Calais, Maine. He moved
from Scarboro to Jonesport to Machias in1779. Daniel went to
Plymouth, Mass., and after marriage lived in the vicinity of Casco
Bay. He is said to be the Father of Calais, Maine, being the first,
permanent white settler there. Daniel was unmarried as of 1762 and was
of Scarboro,Maine, according to the LIBBY Family in America. On Jul 8,
1764 when Daniel was 27, he married Elizabeth HOLMES, daughter of Ephraim
HOLMES & Sarah FINNEY, (Mayflower Descendaants of Francis COOKE and
Richard WARREN) in Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. They had thefollowing
children:

2. Elizabeth (Betsey) HILL.Born in 1765. Elizabeth (Betsey) died in
St. Stephen, NB on Aug 15, 1853, she was 88. On Dec 20, 1787 when Elizabeth
(Betsey) was 22, she married James MAXWELL U.E., in St. Stephen NB. Born
abt 1762 in Armagh, Ireland. James died in St. Stephen NB on Aug 26, 1847,
he was 85. They had the following children:

3. Daniel HILL , Jr. Bornon Apr 7, 1767 in ? Machias, Washington County,
Maine. Daniel died in Oak Bay, Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada
on Dec3, 1846, he was 79. Buried in Old Oak Bay Cemetary (Church of England),
off St. Davids Ridge Road, Oak Bay, Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada.
Daniel was lumberman and sawmill owner. He and his wife are buried in
the Old Oak Bay Cemetary (Church of England) off St. Davids Ridge Road,
Oak Bay, Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada. He died at age
78 years. Daniel was said to be "of Warwick," but I think it
should be "of Waweig." Daniel and his wife Sarah are buried in the Old
Oak Bay Cemetary (Church of England) off St. Davids Ridge Road
(lower end, near Oak Bay). On Nov 30, 1789 when Daniel was 22, he married
Sarah (Sally/Polly) SPRAGUE, (who's daughter is she?) in?St. Stephen,
Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada. Born on Dec 16, 1771 in ?Machias,
Maine. Sarah (Sally/Polly) died in Oak Bay, Charlotte County, New Brunswick,
Canada on Nov 20, 1845, she was 73. They had the following children:

married Abigail DYER, daughter of Jones DYER & Hannah HARRINGTON. Born
in 1779. Abigail died in Calais on Dec 29, 1837, she was 58. They had the
following children:

it is believed that she is a granddaughter of Japhet HILL), in Calais,
ME. Born on Aug 31, 1794. Rebecca died in Milltown ME on Apr 12,1878, she
was 83.
6. Charlotte HILL.Born in 1776 in St. David, Charlotte County, New
Brunswick, Canada. Charlotte died in Jun 1864, she was 88. On Mar 17, 1793
when Charlotte was 17, she married Alexander THOMPSON, in St. Stephen,
Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada. They had the following children:

William HILL. Born in Nov 1777. William died on Aug 24, 1866, he was
