Saint Patrick Parish GenWeb
Census & Directories
Last Updated 23 Apr 2001

The first census in New Brunswick to record the names of all people was in 1851 and there were similar censuses every ten years after that until 1956 when the frequency was changed to every five years. The 1851 and 1861 enumerations were provincial and were conducted by the New Brunswick government, while the 1871 and subsequent censuses were federal and were conducted by the government of Canada as part of the regular Canada-wide censuses. All records to 1901, inclusive, have been made public but the federal government is still deciding whether to (ever) release the post-1901 census records. See the Post 1901 Canadian Census Project Website from the Global Gazette for more information.

Saint Patrick Parish has been used as a census sub-district in all of the enumerations from 1851 to the present. Transcriptions of available enumerations are given below. For before 1851, tax records are a good head-of-household census substitute.

"I am a sensus tayker for the sitee of Bufflow.  Our sitee has groan verry fast in resent years & now in 1865, it has bekum a hard & time konsuming job to kount all the peephill. There are not many that kan do this werk, as it is nesesseree to have an ejucashun, wich a lot of pursons still do not have.  Anuther atribyout needed for this job is gud spelling, for meny of the pephill to be kounted can hardlee speek inglish, let alon spel thair names!"

Hopefully this explains why you see your "names" spelt differently in some places.
