Tishomingo County Mississippi Archives
& History Museum
For more than 12 years,
the Tishomingo County Historical & Genealogical Society has served as the
repository for the history of Tishomingo County, Mississippi.
In 2003, the Society transferred its holdings to the old Tishomingo
County, Mississippi Courthouse and established the Tishomingo County & Archives & History Museum.
The courthouse museum has a well-rounded inventory of interesting exhibits including
Indian artifacts, Civil War and other military memorabilia from the Battle of
Iuka, local industry, and period furnishings.
A photographic display of those people who served in the courthouse during its
historical period is detailed along the walls throughout both levels.
Family lifestyles are exhibited in the home front, medical, and military
displays. Local artists have created
many beautiful works of art depicting our historic towns. Post cards of
most of the art is on sale in our Woodall Mountain Market, where you will also
find arrowheads, books, pictures, many hand-made items, and County-wide
memorabilia to remember your trip to the courthouse museum.
The courthouse is unique in the fact that it has a bell without a tower and has
three inside vaults. Governor John Marshall Stone was instrumental in getting
the vaults after the courthouse fire of 1886. The purpose of the vaults were to
protect the important records of the county in case of a second fire. Today, we
use two vaults to exhibit Native American, Military, and Pioneer Life Styles.
The third vault is used for archiving original records.
J. T. Weaver was awarded the contract to build the courthouse in the amount of $7,785.35 in 1888,
after the original structure burned in 1886.
The courthouse annex was added in the 1930s and is home today to our Native
American Room, John Marshall Stone Research Library, and Military Room.
