A BRIEF HISTORY OF CEMETERY:

On June 30, 1882, one acre of land was purchased by St. Paul Lutheran Church to form the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. The cemetery is located on Highway 32 (known then as the Ste. Genevieve gravel road) just east of Farmington, MO. The land was purchased from John A. Weber. The Trustees representing the church were Peter Mell, Charles Best, and Henry Westmeyer. Purchase price was $75. Each voting member of the church was obligated to pay $6 for participating owner rights. The members who paid that fee in 1882 were:

Conrad Meyer Sr.          Henry Westmeyer
Peter Mell Sr.                 Henry Kollmeyer Sr.
Henry Schramm             John Giessing
H. Stier                          Carl Best
Philip Westmeyer           Fritz Herbst
Conrad Meyer Jr.           Pastor U. Iben

An additional acre adjoining the original cemetery was purchased on 6/15/1910 from James Shannon, Mary Jane Atterberry and her husband, Charles Atterberry. Purchase price for this acre was $100. D. F. Giessing and William Schaefer were the Trustees representing St. Paul when this purchase was made.

In December 1932, the State of Missouri purchased the right-of-way to build State Highway 32. St. Paul was paid $50. The only other change in the area of the cemetery was when the Shannon Cemetery was added on the northwest corner of the property.

Maintenance of the cemetery was the responsibility of each plot owner until approximately 1910. Records indicate that after that occasionally an individual would be paid $2.55 - $5 to clean in the cemetery. Approximately 260 loads of dirt was added to the property in 1926 for a total cost of $126. Records indicate that in 1932 a lawnmower was purchased from H.C. Mell in the amount of $6.50 to be used for cemetery maintenance. In 1936, the brick posts and fencing was added around the property. Total cost: $263.42. Gravel and rock have been placed on the driveway many times throughout the years. There was a cistern on the north end of property maintained for many years but is now capped. Other maintenance noted in records are surveying, grading, and seeding. Recent maintenance has included a new “St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery” wrought iron sign and new fencing done in the late 1990’s.
