PCGS Polk County Circuit Court Project

Field archivists from the Secretary of State's (SOS) office, Missouri State Archives, have been
working on the 1800s circuit court case files for the last few years. They bring the files from
the attic of the courthouse to our facility and prepare them for eventual microfilming. As the
records are being processed the archivists generate an index which will eventually be posted
on the Secretary of State's website and also our website. This is a huge project with at least 100
cubic feet of records which will be available for research at completion. These files are a treasure
of genealogical and historical information.

The officers at PCGS felt that the circuit court files starting in 1900 needed the same attention,
so with the blessing of Vesta Seiner, Circuit Clerk, we have started to retrieve the 1900s files
from the attic. The plan is to process them to the same standards as the SOS office and generate
an index that we can post on our PCGS website. Once the index is posted, researchers will have
access to the files. There will be a retrieval fee and copy costs associated with the files or, you may
visit us in person and just pay the copy costs.

PCGS volunteers are cleaning, purging metal fasteners, humidifying and indexing the files in
preparation for microfilming. We had a great time the last couple of Saturdays peeking into the
legal lives of Polk County ancestors. There is still time to volunteer to help with this project. There
is a lot of work to be done and a lot of information to uncover, so join us any Saturday morning
and lend a hand . . . future researchers will thank you.

One of the newest resources added to our collection is the Missouri State Penitentiary records. This
microfilm series covers the time period 1836-1967 with a register of inmates received at the prison.
The register will tell you the inmate’s name, crime committed, vital statistics, distinguishing marks,
if they escaped or were pardoned. The records from 1931-1967 just list names and prisoner numbers.
Anyone researching black sheep in their family needs to check this resource.
