Oregon County was formed on 14 February 1845 from Ripley County and was named after the Oregon Territory.

Oregon County is bordered on the
south by Arkansas (Randolph, Sharp and Fulton Counties), on the north by Shannon County, on the
east by Ripley County, and on the
west by Howell County.

In 2000 the county population was 10,344 in a land area of 791 square miles. The county seat is Alton.
