The Ozark Mountain Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution meets the third Saturday of each month (except August) at 12:00 noon with lunch served, at Heritage Cafeteria, 1364 E. Battlefield, Springfield, MO (corner of Fremont and Battlefield). The speaker and business meeting begin at 12:30 p.m. Wives and guests and C.A.R.s are welcome.

An ongoing project of the Ozark Mountain Chapter SAR has been locating and marking grave sites of Revolutionary War soldiers buried near Springfield, Missouri, and in the surrounding areas in Southwest Missouri. Currently we have researched and found record of 5 Revolutionary War soldiers buried in Greene County, and more than 30 soldiers total buried in the surrounding counties of Southwest Missouri. Each year we try to hold a ceremony to commemorate and mark one of these Revolutionary War graves. One of the biggest projects that Ozark Mountain Chapter SAR has been involved with over the last two years is the MOSSAR Linked Lineage Data Base which is a part of the NSSAR Patriot Index Project (A CD-ROM index of Revolutionary War Patriots and their lineal descendants down to approved applicants of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution) which was completed in the summer of 1998.*Note: This CD-ROM of the NSSAR Patriot Index is now available for purchase from the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution in Louisville, KY.
We are proud that this project was spearheaded by our own Compatriot Gary E. Bishop. Out of the volunteers who entered the information on the database for the MOSSAR Linked Lineage Data Base, 5 of these were our own chapter members: Gary E. Bishop, Mel McNeal, Gerald McCoy, Lemuel Compton, and Glenn Gohr. Many thanks to Gary and these other inviduals who spent countless hours transcribing information from original SAR applications dating from 1889 to the present. Another ongoing activity of our chapter is the color guard. Five of our members, Robert Grover, Mel McNeal, Gerald McCoy, Dan Cox, and Glenn Gohr, each have uniforms from the Revolutionary War period. Bob Grover is a dual member and is a co-chairman of the MOSSAR color guard. He is also the Past MOSSAR President for the 1999-2000 term. These uniforms have been worn at various parades and other functions. In recent months the chapter color guard has given several talks about the American Revolution to grade school children in Springfield and has served as the color guard for one of the SMSU Lady Bears games. We hope to participate in more activities like this in the coming months. The chapter color guard is also participating in MOSSAR color guard events as well. Ever since our chapter's founding in 1981, we have been involved in the Eagle Scout Program and the ROTC Program sponsored by the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Also in the last several years, we have promoted two different essay contests and an oration contest which are part of the National Society SAR program. Still another important project is the organizing of a local society of the Children of the American Revolution. Membership is open to any child from birth to age 21 who can trace their lineage back to someone who rendered assistance to the American troops during the American Revolution. The local C.A.R. society meets 4 times a year at the McDonald's on Battlefield Rd. next to the Battlefield Mall. The chartering ceremony took place on Saturday, February 13, 1999, Old Country Buffet in Springfield. The local society is named the William Freeman Society Children of the American Revolution after local patriot, William Freeman, who is buried in the Springfield National Cemetery. We have a very active C.A.R. chapter, and we won some national awards each year for the last two years. We hope to win some awards for 2001 also. Our chapter made a big showing at the 2002 MOSSAR Convention held April 19-20, 2002. We won awards for the best scrapbook and for the best chapter (Josiah Fogg Award) again. Plaques for these competitions are now being held by our chapter until next year. We are especially proud that our own David Appleby has just completed a year as MOSSAR president (2001-2002). Congratulations, David, on a job well done!
