Were Your Ancestors at the Franklin
County Poor Farm?
If you can't find where your relatives are buried, perhaps
they were buried at the Franklin County Poor Farm. Many inmates were buried in unmarked graves at the original poor farm
east of Union or at the second facility, which was known as the "county
infirmary" but served the same purpose as the poor farm. Later it was known
as the Union Rest Home and, under that appellation, cared for a mix of county
patients and private patients. Although no longer housing county patients, the
building is yet in service as the Sunset Nursing and Retirement Home.
The Franklin County Poor Farm was established in 1851 east of Union. The
following people were either inmates/patients at the original Franklin County Poor
Farm or at the Franklin County Infirmary (replaced the poor farm) or, possibly,
some may have been wards of the court placed with private
individuals who were paid for their care by the county court. The infirmary
later became known as the Union Rest Home but continued to care for wards of the
court. Some were old and ill and unable to take care of themselves. Some were
insane, feeble-minded, retarded, otherwise handicapped. A few children stayed
there in the early years. Some were former slaves. All were unable to work. Some
left and died later.
A surprising number of the inmates had been productive, respectable members
of the community, including a Washington businessman, a St. Clair doctor, a
Union banker, and a St. Clair newspaper publisher. Prior to the advent of Old
Age Assistance and Social Security, people who became unable to support
themselves in later life sometimes had no place else to turn.
Inmates at the poor farm were often buried on the grounds and there are no
markers bearing their names. A few inmates were also buried at the county
infirmary in later years. Some residents were
buried in other cemeteries. Names may be spelled wrong or spelled variously but
an attempt has been made to reflect the record. This list was compiled from a combination of the county records and
newspaper clippings. For further research, I would suggest visiting the Four Rivers Genealogy Society.
