August 8, 2007 -- ELAM BARNES CEMETERY (Campbell Township) -- From Debbie HallI have finally got the o.k. from Cecil Huff to clean up the Elam Barnes Cemetery . This is the cemetery where Randolph Lawrence is buried. There are many people buried in this cemetery. The cemetery is in really bad shape. The cleanup is very extensive. Cecil will not let them pile the brush. Everything has to be chipped and hauled away. The cost of the cleanup will be $3500. This may seem like alot but they will be there for at least five days.  I am asking any one who is interested to donate money toward the clean up of the cemetery. We will be forming a cemetery committee at the reunion this year so that we can keep the cemetery in good shape for future generations. Please contact me if you are interested in helping. They are going to start the cleanup as soon as I can get the money together. Hopefully we can get it done fairly quick. This is a slow time for Southern Construction, which is the company that will be doing the work. They have donated all their equipment for this job, we are just paying for the men who are doing the work. This is a huge savings, and a very wonderful thing that Southern has agreed to do.  If we wait too long they won't be able to get to it. Please email me at email:thwardn@yahoo.com.  Thank you so much Debbie Hall, Goodhope, MO (Posted August 20, 2007)

May 31, 2007 -- Civil War Ground Breaking at Denlow Cemetery (Cass Township) -- From Cathie (Alsup) Reilly Some of the extended Alsup family members are currently working on plans for a Civil War Memorial in Douglas County, Mo. which will hopefully be in place and ready for dedication on Memorial Day, 2008.  The memorial marker will be placed in Denlow Cemetery and will honor all of the Civil War veterans buried there.  Ground breaking took place on May 26th following the annual Denlow School reunion.  A large number of people were present for both events and enjoyed bluegrass entertainment and a potluck meal.  Though a goal for this project has not yet been set, it is forth coming as well as a blueprint. That along with all other information is being posted regularly on the memorial website.  As of May 26th the funds were at $840.  Another memorial marker was dedicated in July, 2006 at Racetrack Hollow in honor of the well-known racetrack established and run by the Alsups in the 1800’s.  Rick Alsup designed and built the memorial marker at Racetrack Hollow and will also design and build the Civil War marker.  Catherine (Alsup) Reilly is the fund raiser for this newest project.  Rick and Catherine have ancestors buried at Denlow who were veterans of the Civil War.  Catherine is also a member of the DUV (Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War).  Anyone interested in donating to the memorial fund may still do so by making payment to Douglas County Memorial Fund and mailing it to Catherine Alsup Reilly at P.O. Box 1091, Fulton, Ky 42041.  You may also contact Catherine by e-mail  donate07@bellsouth.net or you may visit the Memorial Website for regular updates.  http://home.earthlink.net/~cmickeys/dcm/  (Posted August 20, 2007)

Copyrights and Good Ethics -- This site is copyrighted to protect the many creators of the body of work contained here.  Use this information freely but tell your readers where you acquired the information.  A copyright comes into existence when a work is created. Only “original works of authorship” can be protected by copyright.  An example of this would be cemetery records – if you copy names and dates from a cemetery, that in itself might not be copyrightable, unless you have added information to it, such as compiling multiple cemeteries into one source, such as Laine Sutherland’s (et al) Gone But Not Forgotten: Cemetery Survey of the Eastern District, Douglas County , Missouri (1995).  My own transcriptions of Fairview and Oak Forest Cemetery are also copyrighted, because I added additional information not available on the headstones. For works created after 1978, copyright protection lasts for the “life of the author, plus seventy years”. For works created before 1978, the protection is good for a maximum of 95 years, with a minimum of 28 years. Note that “official government publications are not eligible for copyright in any form by anyone” – the information can be used, as it is public domain, but you cannot call it your original work. -- Kristi Towe, Coordinator
