The Cutbirth
Cemetery is another of Christian County’s family cemeteries that exists only in
memory. According to Ralph and Lena Wills who have been so instrumental in tracking
down the old cemeteries, it was located on Swan Creek about 3 miles east of
Chadwick. According to their information it at one time contained 9 graves, two
belonging to “Old Lady Cutbirth” and her grandson Rad who were buried a day or
two following the march of the 2nd Arkansas troops from Yellville to
Springfield during the Civil War. If you have further information or clues as
to who was buried there, please email
Brenda.
I received the
following from Glennda Peterson, which may shed some light on “Old Lady
Cutbirth and her Grandson Rod:
“I have a Rosy Anne
Cutbirth (I have found her first name as Hannah, Rossahnah, and Savanah) born
abt 1833 in Kentucky. She married William Wiggins (b1821) sometime around 1852
in Missouri – probably in Christian County as that is where most of the Wiggins
were at that time. I found them in the 1860 census in Marion, Christian Co
[family 533]. They have a son names James Radford “Rad” Wiggins, b. 1853. Living next to the Wiggins family was Mary
Cutberth, b 1875 Virginia. I have not been able to find James Wiggins of Mary Cutberth
in the 1870 census or after. Do you think they could be the same as those
buried in the Cutbirth Cemetery?”
