James HOGG FAMILY
James Hogg was born in Virginia in Feb. 3, 1812 and died in l892. He married Aurillia Barker Feb. 3, 1813 in New York. They migrated to Jennings Co., IN prior to moving their family in a covered wagon to Missouri circa 1870 They first went to Jasper Co., MO where some of the family stayed When they arrived in Butler Co. they settled in the Oak Grove area. Their children were Marion, Polly, Elizabeth, William, Jefferson, Washington, Lucinda, Rebecca, Annis and Angeline.
Marion Hogg b, August 13, 1832, married Mary Belle Winslow, b. July 15, 1833 in either VA or NC, and may have been from he famous Winslow family of the Mayflower. Jefferson and Washington went to Leslie, AR. Annis married Thomas Withnell and they stayed in southwest Missouri area. Angeline married John Palmer, and lived in Poplar Bluff.
Children of Marion and Mary Belle Hogg were James Robert Hogg, .b Jan 4, 1863 d. July 12, 1934, Jacob, 1860-1876, Marinda Josephine 1865-19? who married John Kinne and had daughter Belle Kinne and Henry, a son who was blind, Millicent M. 1867- ?, Johnny and Francis, twins, b. 1871. Johnny evidently died at birth, but Francis (Frank), who moved to Colorado, lived to 1957, Emma who married a man named Bullock, Martha Hogg, who married Charles Murphy, George Washington Hpgg mad Lafayette C. Hogg. (From History of the Hogg family written by Belle Kinne) The family lived on a farm near the Oak Grove community. Marion Hogg helped organize the first schools in Poplar Bluff.
James R. Hogg, 1863-1934 began selling meat from the back of a wagon, and in 1884 opened his own meat market which he purchased from Tom Hood. His business grew until he owned three markets. Many of his sons grandsons and one great grandson and other relatives operated a meat market business.
There was a Hogg meat market in Poplar Bluff until the last one went out of business in the late 1990s, over a century later. He was elected Sheriff several times and in between served as Mayor.
In addition, he operated a large farm on the west side of town, now known as the Hogg Addition, where he built a distillery and made Jim Hoggs Corn Whiskey. The jugs were unique, and had only the name of Jim and the top and Whiskey at the bottom, with the picture of three hogs eating corn in the middle.
He first married Ida Hilliard and children were Ida Belle, who married Cal McCoy, and Marion Lennis Hogg who married Lucy McCoy. Later he married Susan Klutts and twins John Edmund , who married Carrie Nance Sept, 3, 1905 and James Edward, who married Anna Walker and later Florence Knott, were born on February 12, 1885. He then married Clara Smith and they had offspring of Walter John, b. Sept. 20, 1890. Walter married Ruth Cooper who died while he was a soldier in WW . The next offspring of Jim H and Clara Hogg was James Benjamin Hogg, b. Sept. 14, 1895. who married Mae Marguerite Hart. The last was Clyde Hogg b. Jan. 4, 1899 who married Rutha May Holt
