Cities and townships enumerated by C. O. Budington: Wyoming, Paris, Lowell, Cascade, Bowne, Byron, Ada, Caledonia, Gaines, Lowell Village, Vergennes.

Remarks: This district known as the 2nd Representative District of Kent County comprising the towns named in this schedule, is a region of County possessing all the surroundings that conduce to health - the surface is rolling sometimes rising to hills from some of which Lake Michigan can be seen though 35 miles away. Next the country abounds with springs of pure water of icy coldness some of which discharges 150 gallons per minute. In visiting over 10,000 persons I have not seen six cases of sickness. Mad dogs passed through some parts of this district in July, and some 20 head of cattle and many hogs were bitten, and died with Hydrophobia, but fortunately no person met with misfortune. This district was visited in 1859 in months of June, July and August with heavy frost though not general - the crops of one farmer were almost totally destroyed and the next contiguous were not injured. Soil - clay - sand - sand loam - clay loam. Timber - oak - maple - beech - ash - black walnut. COB AS

Cities and townships enumerated by A. E. Gordon: Grand Rapids City, Grand Rapids Township, Walker Township.

Remarks: No particular disease visited on locality in an epidemic last year – in fact, the City of Grand Rapids, and vicinity, were particularly healthy as a general thing. Neither, as far as my inquiries have extended, has any unusual mortality occurred among the livestock. Owing to the unprecedented frosts, facts, that heavy frosts occurred in this section last year, in June and September, as well as slight frosts during the other summer months, together with the unusual drought, the crops fell far short, and were, in respect to Corn, particularly, more than had ever been previously known here. Altogether, the crops last year, which will be reported from this county were probably not more than a third of the yield of the previous year. Limestone exists to a great extent in this locality, which affects, to some extent, the composition and taste of the water. Red Sandstone also exists. Plaster, or gypsum, underlies a large portion of this vicinity, and as it is easy to access, it is mined in a number of different locations, and used for various purposes, such as for building stone, ornaments, stucco and manure. Salt springs also exist and several companies are now engaged in the manufacture of salt, which cannot fail to prove pecuniarily remunerative. Grand River runs through the city of Grand Rapids, within the space of a little [?] one mile, there is a fall of about twenty feet, thus affording an immense and unfailing water power, which has thus far been only partially taken advantage of. The land is of three kids, Pine, Oak Openings and Heavy Timbered, Beech, Maple and Oaks.

Townships enumerated by A.L. Skinner: Oakfield, Nelson, Solon, Courtland, Grattan, Algoma, Plainfield, Alpine, Sparta, Tyrone.

Remarks: No remarks or description of the locality.
