Elizabeth Shoe Wagner
Martha
Elizabeth Shoe, daughter of Abraham and Eva Shoe, was born in Montgomery
township, Wood county, Ohio, on August 13th, 1841. Her childhood and youth
were spent with her parents. On April 5th, 1860, she was married to John
Wagoner of Tiffin, and began housekeeping on a farm near Flat Rock where
they lived for two years. From here they moved onto a farm in Wood county
where they lived until 1880 when they moved to Lincoln township, Isabella
county, Michigan. Here they lived until failing health-caused them to sell
their farm and go to live with their son at Shepherd. After a couple of
years, they went to live with a daughter, Mrs. Rowlander, of Mt. Pleasant.
In 1913, Mr. Wagoner died and Mrs. Wagoner continued to live with her daughter
until September 1920 when she came to live with Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Nilson
of Shepherd, where she resided until her death on February 21st, 1924,
having passed through 82 years, 6 months, and 8 days of active and faithful
life. She has been a member of the United Brethren church since early in
life, and through the toils and cares of life, has not lost her faith in
a living and keeping Father. She thought of the welfare and comfort of
others and was faithful to life's tasks as she saw them, and patient through
every perplexity she met. She, with her husband, expressed their thought
of others by making a home for Wilbur Price, who
at
the age of 8 years they took from the Coldwater Home, providing him with
that type of home life which caused mutual love between himself and Mrs.
Wagoner. Three children were born into the home, Henry Abraham, Amanda
Alice, and Sarah Isabell. The two daughters have preceded their mother
in death and leaves to mourn her departure the foster son, Wilbur Price
of Martinez, California, one foster brother, J. E. Sole, of St. Louis,
Mich., 8 grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, five nieces and nephews,
besides many other relatives and friends.

Mildred
Murtha Wetzel
Yet
once again it has been most favorably impressed upon our mind that the
Lord is no respector of persons and that death truly loves a shining mark. Like
a thunder clap from a sun-kissed sky came the announcement last Monday
morning that Mrs. H.M. Wetzel had died at the hospital at Ann Arbor at
an early hour that morning. Mrs. Wetzel had left for the hospital the Monday
morning previous accompanied by her brother, Arthur, who came from Camp
Taylor, Kentucky, where he is stationed as a lieutenant in the army. Mr.
Wetzel joined her on Tuesday when an operation was successfully performed
and she seemed to rally and apparently continued to improve until Saturday
morning when
the
attending physician informed him that all apparent danger was past and
Mr. Wetzel returned home Saturday evening he
received
a telephone message from the nurse that Mrs. Wetzel had rested very comfortably
and was continuing to gain. Again on Sunday morning he received another
message bearing the same favorable news, and saying she had rested nicely
all night. At about eight o'clock that evening he-received a third message
and this informed him that there had been a radical change for the worse
and she was evidently suffering from peritonitis. Mr. Wetzel and Mrs. Wetzel's
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Murtha, left on the early train Monday morning
for Ann
Arbor
and had only been gone a short time when word was received here that she
had died shortly after one O'clock
that
night, so the loving friends arrived at their destination onlv for to find
that death had preceded them.
Arrangements
were made to bring the remains home on the train which .arrived here about
9:30 and Rev. Dewey and G.T,. Burdick left on the noon train and went as
far as Howell where they met them and accompanied them home.
Her
untimely death was a shock not only to our citizens but to the relatives
as well as the operation was not considered of a serious nature and no
one was prepared for the fatal result. Mrs. Wetzel was an exceptionally
talented woman and has always been active in the social life of our village
and a willing and efficient worker in every enterprise that had as its
object the promoting of the welfare of our citizens or the town and her
services will be greatly minced. A loving wife and an affectionate mother
she was devoted to her home and took her chief pleasure in making it as
attractive as possible for her loved ones. Mildred Murtha was born in Coe
township May 16, 1883 and practically her whole life has been spent in
this vicinity, She graduated from the Shepherd high school and afterward
attended the Normal at Mt. Pleasant and Ypsilanti, from which latter institution
she received a life certificate. She taught school at Elk Rapids, Shepherd
and Oakdale, Cal.
On
October 5th, 1908, she was united in marriage to Harry M. Wetzel and to
them one child was born, Lewis Duane, who at the ape of eight years has
been bereft of a mother's loving care.Besides the husband and son there
Remain a father and mother, Steve Murtha and wife, and two brothers, Arthur
and Mildred Wetzel, Dale, also one sister,, Mrs. R.L. Curtiss, of Sand
Point, Idaho.
She has
been an active member of the order of Eastern Stars and closely affiliated
with the club and church work of our village and at the time of her death
was a member of the local school board, being the first woman in this district,
to ever hold that position.
The
funeral was held Wednesday at the home and
burial at Salt River cemetery.
