    "Treasures and Their Stories"

    This evening, it is all about YOU! Please bring an heirloom or something of interest that is connected with your family. You may have been cleaning out Grandma's attic and found a treasure that leads you to start searching your family history. Or you may have inherited something that carries an interesting story and has been passed down for several generations. Whatever it is, bring it with you this evening and we will display your items. You will be given time to share the stories behind your keepsakes.

    "The WPA in Detroit: Treasures of the New Deal"

    Join us as author and Walter P. Reuther Library audiovisual archivist, Elizabeth Murray Clemens, shares with us how the Workers Progress Administration affected the lives of so many living in Detroit and surrounding neighborhoods. Many were given a new start in life through this agency that helped transform cities in becoming what they are today.

    DGS treasurer, Gerry Milkie, comes to us having served in the Peace Corps from 1966 to 1968. Sharing his knowledge of the historical, geographical, and political climate of the area, you will walk away with a deeper understanding of this group of people, their lives and their customs.

    Four-time author, Paul R. Kavieff, will regale us with tales of this notorious group that left death and destruction in their wake. Spending years delving into the history and prominence of this notorious group, Paul will take you on a historical trip back into a time when Detroit was introduced to this part of the underworld.

    "Daylight in the Swamp! The Michigan Shanty Boy/Lumberjack-1870"

    If you attended our banquet in 2007, you met Michael Deren. He is coming back as we journey into Michigan's lumbering and immigrant past at this year's banquet. Join Shanty Boy Jim Murphy (Michael Deren) as he recreates the great lumber boom of the 19th century. Cut down trees! Sing songs! Learn the lumbering language! Become a white pine forest!...or a stump! Join in at the Saturday night dance! Using concertina, button accordion, bones and fiddle, Jim will involve you in a memorable lumber camp experience. (And you will learn a lot, too!)
