According to Stackpole's HX Winthrop, Publ. 1923: "Samuel Frost  built a house in 1772. His cellar may be seen directly behind the lime kiln, built by Mr. Wood on the roadside, and a few rods south of Mr. Moore's (1923) dwelling." Also, at the time Samuel Frost arrived  c1770 this was the extreme western central Maine frontier, and his nearest neighbor was Paul Hildreth of what is now Lewiston. The name of Samuel Frost disappears from the records, and Mr. Benjamin, a Winthrop historian, said that Frost joined the Methodists and died in 1812.
29. STEVENS, Christopher
This name appears in Fisher's Soldiers, Sailors & Patriots of RW as a member of Capt. McAllister's Co.
No listing of number in family 1790 census
Christopher Stevens came to Monmouth c1780. from New Meadows. He settled on the corner lot at the junction of the main road from Winthrop and the Academy Rd. At this time 20 or 30 families were scattered about on land included within the bounds of Monmouth. Christopher Stevens signed the petition to incorporate as Wales. It is probable that this is the same man who appears in Wayne in 1790.

Isaac came to Wayne in 1779 with his wife and 5 children. Settled on Lot#148 on which lies the pond now called Dexter Pond. The pond extends completely across the lot, nearly one half being in Winthrop. Isaac built his home on the west side of the pond in Wayne since that portion of the lot was best suited for tillage. Isaac was a Baptist, and the early religious meetings were held in his barn. The Baptist church of Wayne was organized at his house 1-9-1794, and he was chosen as one of the deacons.

Jonathan Howe was one of the early settlers in Wayne village. He built a sawmill on the lower dam which was constructed of logs, and crossed the stream about 60ft. below Wayne village. Thomas Wing had a grist mill on the same dam. A law suit between these two parties over the water privilege resulted in Mr. Howe's ownership of both mills. He also built a store in the village at a very early date, and may have been the first trader in town. Jonathan Howe died accidently by drowning while rafting logs.

Job Fuller was the pioneer of the New Sandwich Colony, and the first to fell a tree here about 1773. He settled Lot#176 west and near the head of Wilson's Pond. His house, no longer standing, is thought to have been the first frame house in town.
Facts relating to Job Fuller from
The History of Kennebec County:
Selectman 1810; Chosen as part of a committee to divide Wayne into proper school districts in 1804; Purchased 3/4 of the grist & sawmills on lower dam in the village in 1818 in partnership with Ellis Sweet. Soon thereafter they sold 1/4 of business interest to Jabez Leadbetter.

*History of Leeds by Stinchfield: About 1783-84 John, Jr. & his brother, Samuel, took their birch bark canoe and navigated the small lakes, streams, and rivers as thoroughfares en route to their new homes in Leeds. They took up land on the banks of the Androscoggin River, from which they cleared the primitive forest, and made homes for their families. Nathaniel also went to Leeds, but shortly returned to North Wayne to live on the homestead in North Wayne.
History of Winthrop by Stackpole & Young: At the time of John's death, son Samuel was in business with his father. They had a vessel, a sloop, called Deborah. "John used to take negro & Indian boys and bring them up to send on whaling voyages. After the Revolutionary War he lost considerable property. He was also a zealous Tory, and historian Little states that Jennings was arrested & imprisoned in 1778 for disaffection to the popular cause." Authors Young add that they have checked several sources & found nothing to substantiate this information. John's sons Samuel & John were patriots during the RW."

76. SMITH, Daniel Rev. Thanks to Nikki Strands of Minneapolis, Minnesota for permission to include the following information. She welcomes queries at NStrands@aol.com
Rev. Daniel Smith was born in Sanbornton, NH in 1767 and came to "the Kennebec" in 1784 - whether with a parent or a group of settlers, or alone, I do not know.  In 1790, living in Monmouth/Wales Plantation, he married Elizabeth Dearborn, niece of General Henry Dearborn.  Subsequently, they moved to Greene and ended up in Wayne, where he filled several town offices and was a millwright. One day, he heard Rev. Jesse Lee, a Methodist missionary, preach.  The story goes that Rev, Lee used as a sermon illustration an anecdote of a man giving in to anger and whipping his cattle (oxen?)  Daniel Smith that day had done just that and he was "convicted" by Lee's preaching.  He and his wife became members of the first Methodist Sunday school class in Maine, and Daniel later received Deacon's orders from Rev. Francis Asbury.  (Thus, he was not a circuit-rider -- in the Methodist church today, would be ministers are first ordained Elders, then Deacons, and finally Ministers).  He and Elizabeth had many children .  His gravestone in Wayne's Evergreen Cemetery says "Blessed are they that die in the Lord" and her's reads "Here lies a tender mother."
