Town of Greene, Maine

Welcome to the Town of Greene!

Sons of Greene native, Luther Mower

(Help is needed identifying some of these individuals)

Susan Reed wrote to let me know that she was a fellow Mower descendant.  She is descended from Jonathan Mower (the father) that settled in Greene following the death of his wife (Elizabeth Bemis) in Charlton, Massachusetts.  Jonathan's son Samuel married Deidama Morey in Charlton, and they had 11 children.  One son, Luther, was born in Greene on 6 Jul 1793.  Luther left Greene and settled in Fairlee, Vermont, and info on him becomes scarce.  He and his wife, Elizabeth Houghton (dau. of Samuel Houghton and Sarah Cook) had four sons and one daughter, Caroline Elizabeth, born about 1827 in Vermont and died 7 Jun 1881 in Lennoxville, Quebec.  Caroline married Daniel Mack Ingham about 1850 and they eventually removed to Quebec.  They were still in Vermont as late as 1870, living in St. Johnsbury.  They had four children, Frank Henry (Susan's great-grandfather), Edward, Georgie A. and Samuel Alfred.

It is possible that one or more of the brothers worked on the railway as Daniel Mack Ingham definitely did, and it is possible that he met Caroline through her brothers.

The picture above is one of Caroline's brothers - Lewis, Henry, Augustus, and one whose name she doesn't know.  The child in the back center may be a son of one of her brothers.  Unfortunately, Susan does not know which brother is which in the picture.  Does anyone know?

You can email Susan directly at sreed85@sympatico.ca.

Can you identify anyone in this photo?

Dr. Everett Parker submitted this photo that includes his mother Ethelyn (Thurston) Parker, as well as his aunt Blance (Thurston) Gayton.  It is believed to be a school photo taken ca. 1910.

If you can provide identification, email greene@mower-family.com.

When our forefathers put down roots in desolate places,

the thing that allowed them to survive was that they had a faith to see them through the tough times.

~ Lee Greenwood

In the early settlement the area within this town was a part of Lewiston Plantation, first called Littleborough, after Moses Little of Newbury, Mass., who was a large proprietor, having obtained title to it through the Pejepscot Proprietors.  The town was named Greene in honor of Gen. Nathaniel Greene, one of Gen. Washington's best officers in the Revolutionary War, and who became very popular in the North.  The large number of Revolutionary soldiers settling here may have had some influence in the matter.¹

Our Mission with this Home on the Web:

To provide genealogical and historic resources and information to fellow genealogists researching family connections and ancestors in Greene Maine; as well as providing an opportunity for all to share information and perhaps connect with a cousin or two.

You will find me often sharing information set forth by my 2nd cousin 3 times removed, Walter Lindley Mower, a local history and genealogical enthusiast, who was intimately familiar with  the Town of Greene, his published history of the town serving as the valuable resource in studying Greene and it's early inhabitants.

I will also be posting queries and other requests for information I receive about both the early families of Greene and the town itself.

Current Projects:

I am currently working on transcribing the early vital records of Greene.

Additionally I am constructing a database of the families of Greene which will be added to RootsWeb's World Connect database.  One stage of this project is to capture the familial information set out in Walter Lindley Mower's History of Greene.  I will then be trying to tie and verify the information to the town's records (and early Massachusetts records as well for those early settlers), as well as to the Federal Census records

How You Can Help:

Photos:  A picture is worth a thousand words.  I am looking for for photos of early Greene residents or descendants of the early Greene settlers.  I would also be interested in adding some photos of the town - old buildings, etc.

Ancestor Sketches:  Share the history of your ancestors with a narrative of their lives and families.

Adopt a Surname:  Do you have a connection or special interest in one of the early surnames found in Greene?  Volunteer to help me research and try to answer queries received about that particular family.  It's a chance to share your knowledge with another and perhaps pick up some new information as well.

If you are willing to help me out from time to time, please drop me a quick line and share with me your interest in Greene.
