Maine Street, Canaan, Maine:  Then and Now

Route 2 (Main Street) passes west to east through Canaan, entering Canaan just after you pass Lake George Road.  Route 2 is intersected by State Hwy 23/Hinckley Road which runs south of Rte. 2 and State Hwy 23/Hartland Road which runs north of Rte. 2.  Battle Ridge Road runs south from Rte. 2. Carrabassett Stream runs under Rte. 2 in the center of the Town.

Along Main Street (on the right as you enter Canaan from Skowhegan) are the Post Office, Town Hall and Barrett Park; on the other side of the street and further down the road is the Canaan Library followed by an old building where Timothy B. Barrett once had a store and then the Canaan Grange.

This was taken from the Post Office/Town Hall parking lot, looking east on Route 2.  The Town Hall is just to the right of the grass and the shadow on the pavement is the Post Office.  There is a big rock in the grass and a sign that says "Barrett Park".

Easy Street is just out of sight, on the left side of the road by the first building on the left.  The multi-colored building is an antique shop.  The bridge goes over the Carrabassett Stream/River.

Hill Road is just above the large shadow, to the right, between the two white buildings.  The first building is now a hair salon and the second one is an antique shop.  Actually, you can hardly see the 2nd one, it's on the left as soon as you turn on Hill Road.  The library is out of view, between the multi-colored and red buildings, directly across from Hill Road.
